General Description
The ESL Instructor will assist adults in acquiring the necessary academic prerequisites to access further post‑secondary education and skill training opportunities, or employment and workplace training opportunities; increasing educational levels for purposes of self‑improvement; learning and developing living and social skills; and acquiring and developing English language skills.
This appointment is contingent upon availability of grant or contract funds. If the funds from the grant or contract that provide funding for this appointment are no longer available, this appointment may be terminated without cause upon written notice to the employee.

Minimum Education /ExperienceOklahoma Teacher’s Certification or Masters Degree Required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and web‑based technology to enhance classroom instruction.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the following:
- the characteristics of the ESL students;
- successful ESL teaching strategies for adults;
- administering a standardized test for adults and how to use this instrument effectively with adult students;
- adult educational materials available for use in ESL classes;
- planning and implementing an individualized career or academic pathway for the adult learner;
- teaching a multi‑level class of adults;
- teaching language acquisition skills to various levels of adults whose primary language is not English.
1. GENERAL
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Light work:
The person in this position may occasionally exert up to 20 pounds of force to grasp, lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
2. PHYSICAL
ACTIVITIES:
This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to students, faculty, staff, and others to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.
This position requires the person to frequently move about the classroom to assist students and perform the essential functions of the position.
This position frequently requires the person to operate a computer, other office/classroom equipment and mobile devices to prepare instructional documents, answer email correspondence, and complete other activities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
3. VISUAL ACUITY:
This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.
4. WORKING CONDITIONS
This position performs the essential functions in an indoor, classroom or office setting.
Experience teaching ESL in an adult education program.
Required TrainingWork Hours
Hours depend upon class schedule. Classes are scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM.
- Teach integrated ESL and how it relates to the adult’s role as a worker, parent, and citizen
- Provide successful teaching strategies and appropriate accommodations for adults with Learning Disabilities and Special Learning Needs
- Develop ESL lesson plans for adults based on their educational needs and goals and keep them available onsite
- Teach a multi‑level class of adults
- Use online platforms and PowerPoint in the classroom for instructional purposes
- Serve people in the community, including those adults who have low incomes or minimal literacy skills
- Make learning student‑centered and relevant to the individual student’s goals
- Engage in active adult ESL teaching strategies which emphasize problem‑solving skills and relate learning to the student’s prior experiences and knowledge
- Provide an accessible and barrier‑free environment
- Provide learning in real‑life contexts to ensure that an individual has the skills needed to compete in the work place and exercise the rights and responsibilities of a citizen and a parent
- Complete 15 hours of professional development
Abide by the policies and procedures published in the Board of Regents Policies and College Policies & Procedures.
Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.
Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.
Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established safety and health procedures and practices.
Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation and shelter in place drills and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
