The contract position is scheduled to begin in March 2026 and is expected to conclude in October 2026, with one unit implemented per month at the rate of $1000 per unit for up to eight total units.

JOB PURPOSE

Under the direction of the VP of Youth Development, the Curriculum Writer designs developmentally appropriate STEM curriculum for children ages 2–9 in YMCA Play & Learn programs. This role is responsible for creating engaging lesson plans and modules aligned to defined storylines, supporting early childhood learning through hands-on, inclusive STEM experiences.

This is a temporary, part-time, deliverable-based position compensated upon completion of approved curriculum. The Curriculum Writer collaborates with a curriculum committee, conducts limited in-person testing at Play & Learn sites, and provides progress updates using Microsoft 365 tools. Candidates should have experience or knowledge in early childhood development and apply developmentally appropriate practices throughout the curriculum design process.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (not a complete list):
  • Research and develop unit plans of varying STEM skills and interests for Early Childhood program participants for up to 8 units with 5 to 10 lessons each.
  • Coordinate the production and distribution of supporting lessons.
  • Test curriculum on-site as part of the production process in one of the Play and Learn programs
  • Under the direction of the VP of Youth Development, the curriculum will align with the YMCAs mission and core values.
  • Ensure that curriculum meets Child Development standards and Developmentally Appropriate Practices.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures regarding the prevention of abuse.
  • Report any suspected abuse, neglect, or misconduct immediately to the appropriate supervisory staff.
  • Attend mandatory training on abuse prevention, including recognizing signs of abuse, and reporting requirements.
  • Assume all other responsibilities as deemed necessary or assigned.
Job Requirements Required
  • Must be 21 years old
  • Understanding of basic principles of STEM and curriculum design
  • Understanding of basic principles of Child Development and Developmentally Appropriate Practices for children ages 2 years to 9 years.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Consensus building and conflict resolution skills
  • Professional attitude and workplace demeanor
  • Proficiency with technology including Microsoft 365 programs.
Preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree or currently enrolled in an education program at a university or college.
  • Familiarity of the current STEM education landscape
  • 3+ years with STEM or STEM Education
  • 3+ years with curriculum development
  • Experience and knowledge in child development
