Job GoalThe job of Van Driver is performed for the purpose of safely transporting students to and from school, school‑related activities, and special programs using district passenger vans; ensuring the vehicle is operated in a safe and efficient manner; and ensuring the safety, supervision, and well‑being of students during transport, including loading and unloading from vans.

- Van Driver Department of Education Certification
- Dept. of Transportation Medical Examiners Certificate
- First Aid Certificate
- CPR Certificate
- Successful completion of required background checks and drug/alcohol testing
Skills and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform routine operational tasks with attention to safety and accuracy. Specific skills include operating passenger vans, administering basic first aid, maintaining discipline, and completing required documentation.
KNOWLEDGE is required of safe and defensive driving practices; student transportation regulations; basic vehicle operation and inspection procedures; student supervision techniques; and district transportation policies and procedures.
ABILITY is required to work independently and as part of a team; communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff; follow established routes, schedules, and procedures; maintain confidentiality; respond appropriately to emergencies; and manage frequent interruptions and distractions.
Performance Responsibilities- Observe all safety rules and practices; safety comes first in all operations.
- Be completely familiar with the contents of the Ohio Pupil Transportation Rules and Regulations as published by Ohio Department of Education and Ohio Department of Highway Safety.
- Be completely familiar with the transportation regulations adopted by the Woodridge Board of Education.
- Be completely familiar with accident procedures and regulations.
- Maintain discipline among all van riders; report any serious offenses to the building principal not argue with parents. Refer unhappy parents to the supervisor or principal.
- Drive only at scheduled times and over established routes. Pick up and unload students at authorized stops. Once a pupil is on the van they should not be left off until they reach their designated stop.
- Arrive early enough to check all equipment, each time before leaving, to be sure that it is in proper operating condition.
- Report any malfunctioning of equipment to the mechanic or transportation supervisor after each run. In the event of a break down, notify the transportation department.
- Attend required safety meetings, in‑service trainings and certification updates.
- Communicate professionally with parents, school staff and administrators regarding transportation related matters.
- Keep van clean both interior and exterior. Sweep interior of van daily, but do not sweep trash into yard or street.
- Supervise the loading and unloading of passengers; prevent pushing and crowding.
- Complete reports as requested.
- Complete an annual physical examination by the Summit County Health Dept.; oftener if requested by the Board of Education.
- Drives school's vans for the purpose of transportation students over scheduled routes and t/from school and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner.
- Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving and/or recommending a resolution to the situation.
- Assist all students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from vans including both emergency situations (including van evacuations) and normal transport.
- Attends meetings, trainings, etc. for the purpose of maintaining skills and meeting requirements of school van driver certificate.
