Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich), one of Europe’s leading universities, establishes an interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Centre (Sonderforschungsbereich 1369 of German Research Foundation) “Culture of Vigilance:
Transformations – Spaces – Techniques”. This Centre covers a broad time span from the Assyrian Empire to the present. It investigates the historical and cultural foundations of watchfulness as well as the participation of individuals who lend it their heightened attention partially and situationally in the service of a higher task.

The Collaborative Research Centre invites applications for a research project in European Ethnology to investigate “The immigration of spouses from non-EU countries into the EU. Spaces of watchfulness in the context of the Russian German border regime”. This project examines practices of vigilance in German and Russian institutions/ organizations in e.g. Moscow, Saint Petersburg which govern marriage migration and analyses strategies which couples develop in order to pass bureaucratic control and cope with forms of alleged suspicion.

The project is led by Prof. Dr. Irene Götz.

Your responsibilities:

  • conduct research (including fieldwork) in the context of this project (with an opportunity for a PhD)
  • support and help organize project based events and activities
  • participate in a doctoral research training group of the Collaborative Research Centre

Your profile:

  • candidates should hold a master degree in the field of European Ethnology or Social and Cultural Anthropology with excellent results
  • readiness of conducting ethnographic fieldwork in Russian cities is a requirement
  • excellent command of Russian and German as well as very good knowledge of English is required
  • candidates have to demonstrate their openness towards working in an interdisciplinary context as well as an interest in theoretical questions
