Equine Care Assistant (or Apprentice)

Full time apprentice or part‑time groom on a professional former racehorse yard. Salary competitive; pets allowed. Accommodation not provided.

Greatwood Charity is looking for a full‑time apprentice or part‑time groom to join our fun and vibrant team. The successful candidate will work on a professional former racehorse yard that prides itself on outstanding levels of animal welfare.

• Stables – preparing stables for use; mucking out regularly; spring cleaning of stables after winter use
• Feeding – keeping feed equipment and buckets clean; preparing hay; filling water buckets; measuring out food (under direction); and checking that the horses have eaten
• Horse care – undertaking field checks (checking on horses, fencing and troughs); catching horses from paddocks and leading in, checking for lameness while walking the horses in from the fields; grooming; assisting the vet and farrier; assistance with health under supervision, including hosing, poulticing, bandaging and administering oral medication
• Retraining – lunging, long reining (not essential but desired)
• Environment Care – light maintenance including sweeping and hosing down the yard; washing, and painting walls and fences; field maintenance, cleaning out water troughs; dung removal from fields; washing of rugs; cleaning tack
• Assisting visitors and students

• Be organised and able to behave in a professional manner
• Be able to work within a team and on some weekends
• Be local to Greatwood as we cannot offer accommodation
• Be articulate, with good communication skills in order to represent Greatwood appropriately
• Be physically fit, happy to work hard and be reliable
• Be flexible and able to respond rapidly to changing priorities
