Non-Exempt - Pay Range: $21.98/hour
The Watershed Restoration Technician works under the direction of the Watersheds Program Director to conduct maintenance of watershed treatment equipment, develop and advance remediation projects resulting from abandoned mine lands and non-point source pollution, assist in water quality monitoring, and engage the public through community events and water quality education.
Essential FunctionsWatershed Project Implementation & Infrastructure Maintenance
- Maintenance (both regularly scheduled and unexpected) of acid mine drainage treatment systems including limestone dosers and leach beds;
- Maintain Watersheds Program maintenance database and ODNR maintenance tracker. Review and report data for operational trends, treatment efficiency, and reporting;
- Monitor, coordinate and report on Watersheds Program vehicles, boat and trailer use, scheduling and maintenance;
- Assist Watersheds Program with landowner outreach and communication to complete projects through riparian restoration, canal restoration, orphan well remediation and other projects as assigned;
- Assist Watersheds Program staff and the Environmental Education team in the pursuit of funding for and implementation of outreach and education activities including tours and other events;
- Assist Watersheds Program staff with implementation of riparian restoration efforts such as organizing tree plantings, volunteer engagement and landowner communications;
- Work with Watersheds Program team to assist with chemical and biological monitoring of stream sites throughout Ohio as needed;
- Assist Watersheds Program team to identify and secure resources for the continuation of Rural Action’s Watersheds Program;
Education, Outreach & Partner Engagement
- Participate in regional and statewide partnerships surrounding watershed restoration, including the Appalachian Ohio Watershed Council, ODNR DMRM Technical Advisory Committee, and the Ohio River Basin Alliance;
- Represent Rural Action at events and give presentations on Rural Action and the Watersheds Program as requested;
- Coordinate with the True Pigments LLC team to assist in completion of regional watershed work and education initiatives;
- Participate in Rural Action’s organizational activities and meetings;
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in biology, ecology, or chemistry;
- Knowledge of watersheds and streams;
- Self-starter with detail-oriented focus;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Ability and proven experience working in the field in uncomfortable conditions;
- Ability to use and maintain hand tools and power equipment such as generators, mowers and trimmers;
- Ability to lift and carry 40 pounds;
- Integrity, credibility, and commitment to Rural Action’s mission;
- Experience with Google suite, Microsoft Word and Excel, database management, email, social media, and other computer software systems;
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed;
- Valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle.
