The Ohio Land Steward is a 12‑month, full‑time, short‑term position split between the Edge of Appalachia Preserve System (EOA) field office just east of West Union, OH in Adams County, and the Grand River Conservation Campus (GRCC), southwest of Rock Creek, OH in Ashtabula County. The first six months are spent at GRCC, followed by six months will work alongside local stewardship staff and, in collaboration with permanent staff, advance Ohio’s land‑management, stewardship, and restoration goals on both TNC and partner lands.
Work activities are overseen by the Appalachian Forest Manager at EOA and by the Grand River Restoration Coordinator at GRCC, with frequent but not necessarily daily interaction. Duties include a variety of land‑management activities, equipment preparation and maintenance, GPS and related device use, accurate record keeping, and other responsibilities as assigned. Work may occur under variable weather conditions, remote locations, hazardous terrain, and physically demanding circumstances.
This role requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain and a valid driver’s license in compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program.

What You’ll Bring- High school diploma or GED and one year’s training in a science‑related field or related experience in land management.
- Experience working as part of a team.
- Experience making informed decisions and problem solving.
- Ability to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g., First Aid, CPR, pesticide applicator license).
- Capacity to perform physical work under adverse conditions or inclement weather.
- Must be qualified, or be able to become qualified, as a Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2) and complete the required training sequence as outlined in TNC’s fire‑fighter manual.
- One year’s training in a science‑related field or related experience in land management.
- 1‑2 years’ experience in land management or a related field.
- Experience contributing to a safe, equitable, and respectful workplace.
- Knowledge of natural systems and ability to follow instructions from colleagues.
- Strong decision‑making and problem‑solving skills.
- PC and/or mobile device familiarity, including GIS and database knowledge.
- Proficiency in safely operating land‑management equipment (brush cutter, chainsaw, sprayers, UTV, ATV, radio, etc.).
- Recognition of plant and animal species, especially invasive species common in southern Ohio.
- Experience using hand‑held GPS devices and database systems for field records.
The pay for the selected candidate is $18 per hour. This range applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA and will be based on factors such as location, qualifications, skills, and experience. Candidates outside the USA will receive a local‑currency equivalent based on the local labor market.
