Scrub Operating Room Registered Nurse (Healthcare)
The Perioperative Scrub Operating Room nurse works with the patient being prepped for surgery, their family, and as a member of the interdisciplinary care team. The OR nurse helps evaluate the patient and then plan and implement various steps during, and beyond, the surgery. The Scrub RN is responsible through nursing processes for providing and coordinating nursing care, and resource management for patients and families in the operating room.
The RN OR is responsible for providing direct patient care to patients and their families by applying and documenting the nursing process, patient assessment, and nursing diagnosis (planning, implementation and evaluation of interventions). The RN OR utilizes judgment and is guided by knowledge of basic principles of nursing based on the biological, physical and psycho‑social sciences.
- Compile total nursing assessment within the initial shift or specified time frame, including biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self‑care, educational needs, and discharge planning.
- Develop and implement a nursing plan of care based on identified diagnosis, patient care needs, and standards consistent with the therapies of other disciplines.
- Apply a systematic problem‑solving approach in developing, implementing, and evaluating nursing plans of care.
- Document implementation of the plan of care and all nursing interventions, and evaluate effectiveness of the plan of care and outcomes, making revisions as appropriate.
- Observe aseptic technique; secure necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment for surgical procedures in accordance with CCOC policy and surgeon preferences.
- Ensure compliance with narcotics management throughout the Department.
- Demonstrate competency in basic nursing practice required to manage and provide total patient care in the surgical environment.
- Prioritize work and readily address changes in care needs.
- Maintain accountability while delegating responsibilities according to patient needs and staff competencies, and promote effective communication skills.
- Provide staff orientation, training, instruction, guidance, and supervision as necessary, and assist in teaching/competency maintenance/training of all team members.
- Share ideas for improvement or revision of policies/procedures that would enhance the work environment and overall operation of the Department.
- Interpret clinical data and patient responses to care, and collaborate with the health care team to provide comprehensive and coordinated patient care.
- Communicate pertinent information throughout all phases of the nursing process and exchange patient information with physicians and other disciplines to provide optimal care during the perioperative experience.
- Participate in educational programs, serve on committees, and seek other opportunities for professional and personal growth and development.
- Participate in ongoing evaluation to ensure patient safety and quality during the continuum of care.
- Perform all other duties not specifically assigned.
- Education:
Graduate of a school of Nursing. - Experience:
Minimum two (2) to four (4) years of OR experience. - Certifications/Licenses/Registrations:
Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Ohio; BLS required.
