Job Description

Works directly with the company’s management, supervision and trade personnel to implement the company’s Safety and Health Management System focusing on all aspects of fleet safety and compliance with DOT Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and subordinate State program regulations within our organization. The position provides leadership to guide operational managers and company drivers in setting and achieving strategic safety objectives, ensuring regulatory compliance and continuous improvement aligned with the company’s core values.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Operational Leadership:
    Serve as the leader of the Company’s Fleet Safety Management initiatives by coaching, mentoring, and supporting business unit leadership and drivers to ensure compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Fleet Safety Management:
    Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Fleet Safety Management Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in compliance with federal and state DOT/FMCSA regulations and OSHA standards. Maintain a compliance calendar, guide vehicle maintenance, licensing, titling, and IFTA requirements, and prepare necessary reports for regulatory agencies.
  • Driver Management:
    Enforce driver qualification standards, implement a driver performance evaluation system, manage telematics systems, and utilize data analytics to improve fleet safety. Resolve driver‑related safety issues promptly and keep abreast of emerging technologies.
  • Team Leadership:
    Supervise, mentor, and manage staff to ensure effective implementation of the fleet safety program. Foster continuous learning, development, and leadership among team members.
  • Audits and Inspections:
    Conduct regular audits and inspections, analyze safety performance metrics, and implement corrective actions. Lead safety and health audits, inspections, and safety conversations.
  • Incident Analysis and Support:
    Provide support during safety incidents or emergencies, facilitate incident reviews, and assist insurance personnel in investigating incidents.
  • Mitigation Strategies:
    Partner with operational managers to analyze incident trends and inspection data, developing strategies to reduce incidents and ensure compliance.
  • Training and Communication:
    Conduct training sessions and safety meetings, ensuring team members are trained on fleet safety protocols and telematics tools.
  • Point of Contact:
    Serve as a point of contact with federal, state DOT/FMCSA agencies under the guidance of the VP of Safety.
Education/Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in safety and health or equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • 10+ years of fleet safety management experience, including 3+ years of senior‑level experience in construction and mining industries.
Technical Skills
  • Expert‑level understanding of federal and state DOT, FMCSA regulations and company safety and health policies/procedures.
  • Leadership in managing multiple project/facility locations, setting priorities, and delivering safety programs.
  • Experience leading staff to conduct audits, inspections, and behavioral observations.
  • Advanced computer skills (MS Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Phone Apps, Power BI, etc.).
  • Strong organization and administrative record‑keeping skills across multiple locations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, conveying complex safety information to stakeholders.
  • Ability to analyze data to identify trends, training needs, and root cause analysis.
