- Have a thorough knowledge of approved cleaning procedures and the care of school buildings and grounds.
- Be able to make minor repairs as needed.
- Be able to conduct themselves properly around students and the general public.
- Be in proper physical condition to perform the regular duties plus be able to climb and lift at least 50 lb.
- Must have good attendance.
- Must have a telephone in his/her home and a telephone available to his/her employer.
- Must have experienced success in his/her present position and demonstrated a positive attitude toward and pride in the position that he/she presently holds in the school system.
- Must have passed the custodian test offered by the school district.
Building Principal (or Assistant Principal) in cooperation with the Operations and Maintenance Supervisor.
Time ScheduleAfternoon Shift 2:30 PM – 11:00 PM, 1/2 hour unpaid lunch
General DutiesGeneral duties include:
- Sweep steps.
- Remove gum and damp mop spillage.
- Dust all horizontal ledges.
- Clean and sanitize drinking fountains.
- Clean wastebaskets.
- Wet mop/ spot clean/ machine polish or clean and/or spray buff as needed.
- Dust other fixtures (i.e. exit signs, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, security system, etc.).
- Completely dust mop hallways and stairs.
- Remove all writing from lockers.
- Report needed repairs to the Principal or Assistant Principal or Operations and Maintenance Supervisor.
- Check restrooms regularly for clogged toilets, writing on walls, etc.
- Economical and efficient use of supplies and the inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Safety and health of pupils and teachers.
- Removal of all fire hazards.
- Removal of all wall displays, taped to walls due to security system.
- Not leaving the building without the permission of the Principal or Assistant Principal.
- Good public relations.
- Cooperation with the Principal, Assistant Principal, and the Operations and Maintenance Supervisor.
- Responsible for ensuring and checking that all windows and doors in their assigned areas are locked before leaving.
- Being available when activities are scheduled in the building.
- Performing duties aside from routine which need attention.
A. Upper and Lower Gymnasiums
- Prepare these areas for after‑school activities, and thoroughly clean them after activities/practices.
- Check bleachers for trash/spills, and wet mop as needed.
- Dust mop gymnasium floors as needed.
- Spot mop with neutral cleaner as needed.
- Entire locker room area and Restroom 153T, 162T, 164T & 169T.
- BOYS AND GIRLS RESTROOMS AND LOCKER ROOMS
- Empty trash daily.
- Clean and polish chrome every three weeks.
- Clean and disinfect toilets and urinals with cleaner daily.
- Clean and disinfect sinks daily.
- Sweep the floor daily.
- Wash partitions between toilets/urinals as needed.
- Completely strip floors during Christmas and Spring Breaks if needed.
- Wash and disinfect trash cans weekly.
- Empty sanitary napkin disposal units daily.
- Clean and disinfect showers.
- Mop disinfect floors and restrooms.
- Clean and disinfect restroom fixtures.
- Dust mop office, wet mop as needed.
- Remove and clean hood filters semi‑annually.
- Music 168 & 168A thru I.
- Industrial Arts 187 & 188A thru K.
- Sweep/vacuum all classrooms daily.
- Empty trash cans in all rooms daily.
- Wash desks as needed.
- Clean windowsills weekly.
- Clean blackboards weekly.
- Clean chalk tray weekly.
- Dry mop/spot mop as needed.
- Clean doors and door glass to remove handprints weekly.
- Clean all interior classroom windows as needed.
- Check the building for security.
- Check with the Building Principal for additional duties required during special activities.
- This position requires flexibility of routines to accommodate sports activities.
- Christmas Break, Spring Break, Summer:
Night custodian will observe district‑wide day schedule unless activities require otherwise. Coordinate/cooperate with other building custodians and the Operations and Maintenance Supervisor to accomplish major tasks during these breaks.
- Storage and Mechanical/Technology areas are shared by all building custodians. These areas should receive attention during non‑school days.
