Research Scientist in Sociotechnical and Human Aspects in Cybersecurity

Network Security, Information Assurance, Model-driven Security, Cloud Computing, Cryptography, Satellite Systems, Vehicular Networks, and ICT Services & Applications.
The successful candidate will become a member of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust within the Interdisciplinary Research in Sociotechnical Cybersecurity (IRiSC) Team under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gabriele LENZINI, Chief Scientist at SnT/UL and Associate Professor at the University of Luxembourg.
Key responsibilities- Support further developing and expanding the IRiSC team, its research, and role in shaping interdisciplinary research in human‑centred approaches to security and privacy.
- Shape and supervise research direction at the intersection of usable security and cybersecurity, including deceptive and manipulative design, disinformation, and ethical human–AI interaction.
- Lead and contribute to the development and management of national and international projects in IRiSC, including proposal preparation, reporting, and coordination with external partners.
- Foster collaborations across disciplines—particularly between computer science, psychology, and the social sciences—with private and public stakeholders in Luxembourg and abroad.
- Contribute to teaching activities at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD levels in topics such as usable security, human factors in cybersecurity, and empirical research methods.
- Provide daily and content supervision of PhD candidates and support doctoral and postdoctoral training; e.g., research seminars, reading groups, workshops, and conferences.
- Represent SnT and IRiSC in academic and public venues, strengthening the visibility of socio‑technical cybersecurity research in Luxembourg and abroad.
- Participate in Working Groups aiming to develop and discuss Cybersecurity topics and their influence in society, in support of Human Skills in Cybersecurity, and Inclusion and Diversity.
- A PhD in Engineering Psychology, Human Factors, Human–Computer Interaction, Cybersecurity, or a closely related field.
- A researcher with high standards in research ethics and scientific rigor, committed to scientific integrity, free speech, critical thinking, and open inquiry.
- At least five years of postdoctoral or equivalent experience in socio‑technical cybersecurity or human‑centred security.
- A strong publication record in top‑tier venues bridging Human–Computer Interaction and Cybersecurity; e.g., CHI, SOUPS, IUI, CCS, DIS, TOCHI, FAccT.
- Demonstrated expertise in empirical research methods, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches for studying user behaviour, security awareness, and manipulative design.
- Proven experience in funding acquisition, project management, and coordination of national and international, and EU projects.
- Proven experience in teaching and supervising MSc students and PhD students, and in leadership in steering their research.
- Proven integrity and capacity to handle sensitive or dual‑use research responsibly, respecting confidentiality and ethical principles.
- Active engagement in the research community; e.g., programme committees, invited talks, workshop organisation, and commitment to open, collaborative science.
- Experience with tools for qualitative and quantitative analysis; experience and practice with machine learning and Artificial Intelligence are also considered assets.
