  Firefighter Mile & initial oral board interviews conducted.

While the current hiring process prioritizes Firefighter/Paramedic candidates, as of January 1, 2026 the Westerville Division of Fire is also seeking full‑time Firefighters with EMT‑Basic certifications (FT FF/EMT‑B). Candidates hired as a FF/EMT‑B must be enrolled in a Paramedic Certification Program within 6 months of hire and must successfully complete the certification within 36 months as a condition of continued employment.

Per contract guidelines, the division will cover the remaining tuition for those already enrolled in a paramedic program or the full tuition for those who have not yet started. Hired EMT‑B candidates will be placed at a training rate step ($26.91/hour) until satisfactory completion of a paramedic certification.

• Respond to fire and emergency medical alarms.
• Assist in fire suppression activities.
• Administer basic life support, advanced life support, and emergency medical treatment to individuals in life‑threatening and/or hazardous situations.
• Utilize emergency medical equipment, devices, and supplies.
• Assist with maintaining equipment and fire station.
• Remove individuals from burning structures or hazardous situations.
• Operate fire pumps, hydrants and high‑volume hoses to control fires.
• Move furniture and/or building material to limit fire/smoke damage.
• Climb ladders to assist in personal safety or property protection.
• Utilize breathing packs, axes, shovels and other related equipment to control fire/smoke damage.
• Attend practices and receive training to improve and maintain firefighting and EMS skills and certifications.
• Drive City vehicles during emergency responses.
• Perform routine inspections of buildings to ensure compliance with City and State fire safety codes.
• Assist in fire/safety educational programs.
• Work 24‑hour shifts.

• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Certified as an Ohio firefighter II.
• Must be a certified EMT by the State of Ohio.
• Must be enrolled in a paramedic program or able to enroll within 6 months of hire.
• Must possess a valid State of Ohio Motor Vehicle Operator's License free from excessive violations.
• Must be able to successfully complete and pass the Ohio Fire Safety Inspector course.
• Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for varied periods of time under possibly dangerous conditions.
• Ability to work in severe weather conditions.
• Ability to climb ladders.
• Ability to lift and carry 125 lbs.
• Ability to drag 175 lbs. at least 100 feet.
• Knowledge of firefighting principles, practices, and safety.
• Knowledge of tools, equipment, and instruments utilized in firefighting operations.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment under stressful circumstances.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with associates and the general public.
• Ability to consistently exhibit a motivated demeanor and positive work ethic.
• Ability to detect minor equipment malfunctions and determine proper method of repair.
• Ability to read and recognize hazardous warning labels.
• Knowledge of geographical layout of the fire district.
• Knowledge of emergency medical treatment relative to level of certification.
• Ability to collect, analyze and interpret data.

• Operation or utilization of emergency medical equipment and materials.
