Lead Hazardous Waste Handler
The Lead Hazardous Waste Handler is responsible for the safe handling, transportation, and disposal of hazardous materials, ensuring compliance with local, state, federal and host nation environmental regulations. This position provides daily leadership to hazardous waste handlers and ensures full compliance with regulatory requirements including Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). and applicable host nation environmental agencies.
The Lead Hazardous Waste Handler serves as the primary point of contact for waste management activities and ensures that all materials are managed in accordance with the applicable standards.

- Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure all hazardous waste activities comply with RCRA, DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR), OSHA or applicable host nation safety standards. Maintain waste profiles, manifests, land disposal restriction (LDR) forms, and shipping documentation. Conduct weekly hazardous waste area inspections and maintain inspection logs. - Identification and Sorting:
Identify hazardous materials and sort them for proper handling and disposal. Ensure proper labeling, marking, placarding, and segregation of hazardous materials. Perform waste sampling as required for characterization. - Packaging and Transportation:
Safely package hazardous waste and transport it to designated disposal facilities, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Coordinate waste shipments with approved Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facilities (TSDFs). - Record Keeping:
Maintain accurate records of hazardous materials handled, including disposal methods and quantities. - Safety Compliance:
Adhere to safety protocols and regulations to protect public health and the environment, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Oversee container compatibility, secondary containment, and storage time limits. - Inspections:
Conduct regular inspections of hazardous waste storage areas and ensure proper housekeeping practices are followed. - Training and
Collaboration:
Participate in ongoing training related to hazardous waste management and collaborate with environmental agencies during audits and inspections. - Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
- Education:
An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a related field desired. Additional education in environmental science or a related field is a plus. - Certification:
Certification in hazardous materials handling, such as HAZWOPER, OSHA 30, or confined space entry may be required. Certifications to operate equipment such as a forklift or light duty truck may also be required. Personnel performing duties under this management service CLIN shall have at a minimum Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances 520 (TRGS 520) basic training and shall possess competency skills beyond the basic TRGS 520 training. - Experience:
Minimum of 3 years of experience in regulated and hazardous waste management. Knowledge and experience in the managing of chemicals/RW/HW materials, chemical compatibility & segregation. Expertise in managing chemical compatibility and segregation. Ability to learn new programs and database systems as required. Experience with data entry and various computer software programs, i.e., Excel. Ability to read and comprehend chemical Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in English and German.
Ability to speak, read, write, and communicate in English to command points of contacts (POCs) regarding management & disposal of waste. - Skills:
Strong knowledge of environmental regulations, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to operate heavy machinery safely.
