Job Summary

Battelle is currently seeking a highly motivated, team‑oriented Sr Energetics Engineer III within the Advanced Materials and Energetics (AME) Division working with the High Energy Research Lab Area (HERLA) located in West Jefferson, OH
. This position will report to HERLA management and be responsible for current client program execution, development of new business and mentorship of staff. This position is expected to support the division manager and HERLA manager with executing group, division and business line strategic goals, business planning and business growth. Our Energetics Team is staffed with experts in all manner of arms, ammunition and explosives including munition design and engineering, chem/bio defeat devices, advanced performance measurements for energetics, advanced energetic initiation, and energetic material formulations and material science.

This expertise includes operating with the complex safety, security, and environmental requirements and regulations that come with energetic materials. We take advanced technology concepts and materials from the laboratory scale to a fieldable prototype. The HERLA is a one‑of‑a‑kind, privately owned facility located on a 1200‑acre plot of Battelle‑owned land in West Jefferson, Ohio. The Energetics Team and HERLA are certified to handle the full range of energetic materials including Hazard Class 1 explosive materials, propellants, pyrotechnics, and ordnance items.

Responsibilities
  • Execute existing contracts supporting various government clients related to energetic materials chemistry, novel energetic diagnostic development, munition component development, low‑rate initial production, energetic material performance testing and other emerging technologies.
  • Develop and execute safety documentation and ensure resulting practices are effectively integrated into the work being performed.
  • Perform design work for test fixtures, control systems and data collection utilizing various CAD systems.
  • Act as a leader and mentor for conducting hazardous operations. Help with training of safe operations and compliance with regulators related to the energetic materials industry.
  • Support the team on upkeep of facilities, staff training and business growth strategies.
  • Work with Program Managers and Business Development to leverage client relationships to stay informed of client business plans and priorities and identify high growth/value opportunities for Battelle with our various clients. Position Battelle to win follow‑on programs and new business.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to internal management and to external customers. Work with program managers and technical staff to understand program goals to ensure high‑level contract performance ratings.
  • Stay abreast of industry needs and issues. Help bring in needed skills as the industry evolves.
  • Analyze data and recommend modifications to experiments or procedures to meet desired specifications/deliverables.
  • Assist with the technical writing of internal and external reports and presentations.
Key Qualifications
  • The candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in a related field; at least 5 years of technical or program management experience; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience in management of hazardous operations, knowledge or management of energetics RDT&E or a related field.
  • Excellent oral and communication skills to effectively interact with higher management levels internally and with client organizations, subcontractors, consultants and staff.
  • Experience working with U.S. government clients, including leading/writing proposals, proposal and bidding processes, awards, and execution.
