Position Overview

Under direction of the Director of Educational Resources, The Coordinator of Special Education will focus on the results-driven indicators of special education, aligned with research based instructional strategies, supports and services, and inclusive practices.

TRAINING

Appoquinimink School District may require you to be trained in Safety-Care or a similar competency-based crisis prevention intervention training program as a condition of your continued employment.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed in relation to the position. This is not a comprehensive listing of all the responsibilities or tasks; other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate:

  • Work in conjunction with the Director of Educational Resources to carry out the District's Strategic Plan and curricular initiatives.
  • On a regular basis, visit special and regular education classrooms to observe and evaluate the effectiveness of instructional programming. (DPASII)
  • Lead and evaluate instructional coordinators at the elementary and secondary level.
  • Determine whether daily instruction corresponds to goals and objectives of the student's individualized education program (IEP)
  • Monitor buildings and support schools in meeting targets established by the LEA Annual Report Card.
  • Focus on results indicators aligned with instruction, specifically indicators 1,2,3,5, and 7 by developing a long-range plan for increased effectiveness.
  • Working with schools and building leaders with scheduling and managing staff resources for implementation of supports and services.
  • Monitor building level accountability and provide interventions and support for building level administrators to increase student achievement.
  • Work in conjunction with the teaching and learning team to facilitate support and professional development for building level coaches in inclusive practices.
  • Attend state-level special education professional development opportunities as needed.
  • Facilitate training (PLC's) for ED's
  • Create a weekly newsletter highlighting instructional and inclusive practices.
  • Monitor and manage the consolidated grant with an instructional focus.
  • Conduct curricular resource audits to determine if materials, equipment and other supports are available and are adequately and properly used.
  • Confer with teachers and administrators to provide technical assistance for improvement of instructional skills and behavior management.
  • On a regular basis, consult with teaching staff to assure that specific needs of the student are met.
  • Assure that appropriate personnel are available and efficiently deployed for all due process and instructional activities, including related services personnel.
  • Provide on-going consultative assistance, in conjunction with assigned special education teachers, to regular education teachers serving students with disabilities.
  • Maintain information on and liaison with other public and private agencies and individuals who provide services to students with disabilities in the district.
  • Disseminate information and training provided by the Special Education Department to district personnel, parents, and students.
  • Coordinate instructional programs with the elementary and secondary curriculum directors
  • Collaborate with all building administrators and the supervisor of student services to implement quality instructional and support programs
  • Manage and prepare for audits on budgets of local, state and federal funding and grants as it pertains to students with disabilities.
  • Confer regularly with the business administrator to assign appropriate funding sources for students covered under IDEA
  • Other Duties as assigned by the Director of Educational Resources.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters in Special Education and/or Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Experience as an elementary teacher preferred.
  • Must have demonstrated leadership in leading instruction and inclusive practices at the district level.
  • Knowledgeable of all IDEA guidelines, excellent communication, organizational, and computer skills.
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instructional best practices.
  • Must understand and be able to lead and coordinate the results-driven special education indicators (1,2,3,5, and
    7)
  • Criminal background check, tuberculin testing, and health verification.
  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience in a public-school special education classroom/program
