Instructional Assistant (Paraprofessional) Substitute Works 5.75 hrs. Hourly Rate $14.00

Minimum Qualifications
  • Educational Aide Permit or Paraprofessional License
  • High School Diploma with postsecondary training/education in working with and educating individuals with disabilities preferred
  • Effective communication skills, which includes the ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationship with students with diverse backgrounds and needs individually or in group situations
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationship with associates, school officials, and the public
  • Ability to efficiently operate standard office equipment
  • Good health, high moral character, and a good attendance record
  • Ability to lift at least 60 lbs.
  • Willingness to attend any provided training designed to qualify a person to perform effectively their assigned duties
  • Must pass the required Educational Assistant Examination
Report To
  • Educational assistants shall at all times while in the performance of their duties be under the supervision and direction of the teacher to whom the assistant is assigned
  • Building Principal and/or the Director of Pupil Services
Job Goal

Educational assistants assist the teacher and/or other professionals in the provision of special education and related services to pupils with disabilities. Educational assistants may assist a teacher to whom assigned in the supervision of pupils, in assisting with instructional tasks, and in the performance of duties, which, in the judgment of the teacher to whom the assistant is assigned, does not require a teaching certificate or license.

Performance

Responsibilities

The individual in this assignment must discharge all delegated responsibilities in a manner consistent with federal law, state law, and the policies adopted by the Woodridge Board of Education, and pursuant to procedures established by the Administration. Such responsibilities shall be delegated by and through the Superintendent and shall include, but are not limited to, the list below.

Essential Functions
  • Assist in the provision of special education and related services for pupils with disabilities as directed by the teacher to whom the educational assistant is assigned
  • Assist with instructional tasks
  • Assist the teacher in the completion of classroom activities
  • Implement practices and services designated by related services personnel, which are designed to provide special education services to pupils with disabilities
  • Assist pupils with disabilities with transition times (e.g., between classes, lunch, recess, field trips, safety drills, and transportation) as delineated on the pupil’s Individualized Education Program (IEP)
  • Assist the teacher to whom assigned in the supervision of pupils with disabilities
  • Assist pupils with disabilities with health care and personal hygiene needs
  • Assist pupils with disabilities in and out of wheelchairs and with other forms of assistive technology in the provision of special education and related services
  • Participate with teacher(s) in parent conferences and in conferences with other staff regarding the pupil with disabilities welfare

  • Sensitivity to the needs of the pupils with disabilities and their families
  • Ability to relate to school-age pupils
  • Knowledge of personal hygiene and health care procedures related to the pupils with disabilities
  • Willingness to learn about the disabilities affecting the pupils they serve
  • Ability to read and understand a pupil with disabilities IEP
  • Ability to communicate with pupils and other educational/service providers
  • Knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA ’97) and the importance of confidentiality
  • Good listening skills
  • Record keeping skills
Additional Functions
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or the Director of Pupil Services during the time the pupil with special needs is engaged in regular classroom activities, which may include, but are not limited to, the following
