Responsibilities

  • SMEs are responsible for:
    Creating a list of course learning outcomes
  • Writing a course syllabus
  • Recording video “lectures”
  • Designing engaging visual representations to help students learn content
  • Creating engaging assignments, group activities and presentations, writing interactive discussion board topics that enable students to delve more deeply into the content while building community
  • Designing assessments to measure learning outcomes
  • Creating an instructor guide to assist course facilitators
  • Provide expert knowledge in Oceanography
  • Develop learning modules that guide students through their educational experience while upholding and adhering to the CPS commitment to student success
  • Willingness to analyze best practices in online oceanography education
  • Curriculum design experience and familiarity with implementation of principle of backward design
  • Demonstrated skill in creating learning activities and meaningful assessments of student learning
  • Writing and editorial skill, understanding of copyright issues
  • Technical skill in generating and editing graphics/images
  • Excellent collaborative and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently once a task is thoroughly explained and effectively during time-on-task
  • Commit to weekly check-in meetings with the Instructional Design team and/or the Program
  • Participate in drafting a schedule for deliverables
  • Meet agreed-upon deadlines per the master course development schedule
  • Adjunct Faculty are responsible for:
    Providing expert and graduate level knowledge in oceanography
  • Guiding students through their educational experience while upholding and adhering to the CPS commitment to student success
  • Providing timely response to student inquiries, within 24 hours
  • Facilitating class instruction by engaging in the online course portal a minimum of 5 times per week
  • Hosting a minimum of one hour of virtual office hours per week
  • Having excellent collaborative and communication skills
  • Willingness to analyze best practices in online oceanography education
Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate has experience teaching online in an educational setting, has demonstrated expertise in curriculum development and assessment, and has a passion for teaching oceanography
  • Master’s degree in Oceanography field – PhD preferred
  • A minimum of three years teaching experience in the area of Oceanography
  • A desire to motivate and encourage students in academic and professional settings
  • Expertise teaching online and the desire to learn and apply new technological approaches to education
  • Experience using the Brightspace/D2L Learning Management system preferred
