Job Overview

The Head of Industrial Design will lead Genie’s industrial design strategy and execution, shaping the visual and functional identity of our commercial and residential operator products. This role is responsible for driving innovation, user‑centric design, and brand consistency across Genie’s product portfolio and affiliated brands.

The ideal candidate combines creative vision with strong technical understanding and leadership skills to influence product development from concept through launch.

Responsibilities
  • Define and execute Genie’s industrial design vision aligned with business strategy and customer needs.
  • Establish design standards, guidelines, and best practices for aesthetics, ergonomics, and usability.
  • Own and evolve Genie’s Vendor Brand Language (VBL) to ensure cohesive design across all product lines.
  • Apply VBL principles to Genie’s Retail Line, Professional+ Line, and the Overhead Door private‑label brand.
  • Partner with engineering, product management, and marketing teams to integrate design into product development.
  • Advocate for design thinking and user experience across the organization.
  • This role has no direct reports initially but will develop and manage a Co‑op/Intern pipeline to support design initiatives.
  • If workload demands, manage external design firms or freelance designers to ensure timely and high‑quality deliverables.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends, materials, and technologies to ensure Genie remains a design leader.
  • Conduct user research and translate insights into actionable design solutions.
  • Oversee design from concept sketches to final production‑ready specifications.
  • Ensure designs meet cost, manufacturability, and quality requirements.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial design or related field (Master’s not required).
  • 8–10+ years of industrial design experience, including leadership roles.
  • Proven track record of delivering innovative, market‑leading products.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing design excellence and user‑centered solutions.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills; ability to influence cross‑functional teams.
  • Familiarity with Solid Works (used for engineering drawings) and major industrial design software, including:
  • Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Key Shot (rendering)
  • Rhino
  • Alias
  • Creo
  • Sketch Book
  • Fusion 360
  • Blender (preferred familiarity)
