Lead Camp Counselor

HOURLY RATE: $18-$20
Under the direction of the Parks & Recreation Department, this position transports children who are enrolled in the O'Fallon Summer Camp Program, primarily Camp Cavins (6-12yr olds) and Mini-Camps (6-13yr olds), & potentially Camp Choo Choo (3-5yr olds). This involves significant interaction with children and helping to maintain a safe, high quality summer camp program through recreational, educational and enrichment activities.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate records at all times including trips, mileage, and safety logs.
- Communicate with appropriate supervisors about any equipment & maintenance needs.
- Safely transport campers and staff to various locations around the Saint Louis metropolitan area, Southern Illinois, and Central Illinois.
- To drive campers/staff/equipment on day trips. Requires driving various vehicles that hold a capacity of 28 – 70 per vehicle.
- To give passengers a safety orientation of the vehicles in which they are passengers in.
- Ensure that all safety equipment on the vehicles is properly stocked and operable.
- Work with camp counselors to ensure that proper vehicle safety rules are followed and enforced on day trips.
- Communicate immediately any problems with the vehicles to the Camp Director, Recreation Superintendent, and maintenance department.
- Provide department assistance as needed.
- Know and practice emergency procedures, including evacuations.
Skills And Abilities
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral &/or written instructions.
- Ability to express maturity in thought, work habits and responsibility.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective & courteous working relationships with youth, their parents, other park staff, community organization partners and the public.
- Ability to act as a role model for young children.
- Ability to safely operate large vehicles in high traffic areas, interstates, country roads, and city roads.
- Ability to work outdoors for long period of time.
- Ability to stand or sit for an extended period.
- Ability to bend, stoop, squat, and twist both ways.
- Ability to run or jog at a moment’s notice.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs without assistance.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License with passenger/school bus endorsements.
- Clean driving (verified by background checks)
- CPR/AED & First Aid certified, or the ability to become certified
- Previous experience working with youth is a plus.
- Basic Bus maintenance knowledge
