JOB TITLE:
Lead Camp Counselor
DEPARTMENT:
Parks and Recreation – Recreation
FLSA STATUS:
Non-Exempt
HOURLY RATE: $16-17
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for providing supervision, instruction, and ongoing assistance to the camp counselors and camp directors. They will be overseeing a group of camp counselors, ensuring the safety and positive experience of their assigned campers by leading activities, managing camper behavior, coordinating with other staff, and providing mentorship to junior counselors. All this while upholding all camp safety protocols and policies;
essentially acting as a primary point of contact for counselors within the camp program.
- Create a nurturing, positive, and professional environment while following program policies and procedures.
- Gather and organize materials needed for daily activities.
- Assign/oversee staff tasks.
- Responsible for signing out all campers to their parents at noon and after camp (until 6:00pm)
- Provide supervision and assistance to all campers and staff.
- Follow camp protocol regarding behaviors.
- Primary point of contact when directors are not there for parents/guardians
Skills And Abilities
- Ability to guide camp counselors throughout their daily activities.
- Ability to understand and disseminate instructions to counselors.
- Ability to establish a good rapport with families of the program and keep them informed of all concerns affecting campers.
- Ability to remain calm when dealing with various situations and make decisions that follows camp policy.
- The ability to understand and comply with workplace rules and policies.
- Must be able to work and cooperate with others, resolve problems, and possess a positive attitude while contributing to and maintaining a safe, productive, and respectful work environment.
- Must always represent the department in a positive and professional manner and serve as a reliable source of information about department programs and activities.
- Ability to work outdoors for long period of time.
- Ability to stand or sit for an extended period.
- Ability to bend, stoop, squat, and twist both ways.
- Ability to run or jog at a moment’s notice.
- Ability to lift 25 lbs without assistance.
- Education, Experience, Certifications And Licenses
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License
- Previous experience working with youth in a professional setting
- CPR/AED & First Aid certified, or the ability to become certified
