Patient Care
- Provides basic nursing care to non-acutely ill patients within the Nursing Assistant’s scope of practice that includes actions that meet psychosocial needs and physical needs.
- Provides general aspects of care that meet psychosocial or physical needs, or both simultaneously, within the Nursing Assistant’s scope of practice.
- Meets the communication needs of patients.
- Demonstrates performance reflecting the initiative and responsibility expected of a Nursing Assistant.
- Performs other duties as assigned, within the Nursing Assistant’s scope of practice.
- Assists in admission, transfer and discharge of patients.
- Performs basic patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patients’ age.
- Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when patient complains of pain.
- Communicates to the RN for any observed changes in patient status and responses. Maintains awareness of the needs of the adolescent, geriatric, and general patient population.
- Assists with feeding patients and maintaining fluid balance with techniques appropriate for patient’s age and physical condition.
- Provides explanation to patients and family prior to administering care to patients; answers questions within scope of practice.
- Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services within scope of practice.
- Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
- Prepares medical records for new admissions and discharged patients.
- Obtains appropriate nursing staff to assist patients/physicians in the care of a patient.
- Transcribes physician orders within one hour after being written.
- Enters and verifies orders in the computer system.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to charge nurse, co-workers and physicians.
- Orders supplies and printing weekly, obtains orders as required.
- Answers telephone / intercom in a polite manner and communicates information to the appropriate personnel / family.
- Performs all aspects of indirect and/or direct patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills under the direction of an RN.
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized, and function in stressful situations.
- Responds to patients in emergencies or physically distressful situations.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
- Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
- Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
- Meets current documentation standards and policies and completes within shift.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
- Coordinates and supervises patient care under the direct supervision of an RN.
- Demonstrates knowledge of disease entities.
- Provides care appropriate to the condition and age of the patient, including adolescent, geriatric, and general population.
- Medical and surgical asepsis is carried out during treatments and special procedures.
- Promotes a culture of patient safety which results in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices.
- Utilizes Culture of Safety survey responses in improvement efforts.
- Identifies risks and hazards to patients through various risk assessments, with actions taken to mitigate patient harm.
- Improves medication safety practices, including increased reporting of adverse drug events and improved compliance with the medication reconciliation process.
- Decreased, hospital-acquired infections and improved compliance with infection control practices (including hand hygiene),
- Decreased hospital acquired conditions such as complications associated with ventilator use and pressure ulcers, through improved compliance with patient safety bundles and/or other formal performance improvement programs.
- Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and clean.
- Completes annual education requirements.
- Maintains regulatory requirements.
