With close supervision and instruction, we are seeking an Ophthalmic Technician Assistant who will learn to assist the Ophthalmologist with patient care by performing ophthalmic testing as outlined below.

- Obtain and concisely record an accurate patient history:
Chief complaint, Past ocular history, Family history, Systemic illnesses, Medications, Allergies and drug reactions, Social history. - Basic skills and lensometry:
Measure visual acuity at distance and near, perform pinhole testing, contrast sensitivity, Ishihara or HRR color vision testing, lensometer, exophthalmometry, Amsler grid, Schirmer testing, evaluate pupillary reactions (including afferent pupillary defect), estimate anterior chamber depth, operate ophthalmic equipment (IOL Master, Orb‑scan, BAT, PAM, autorefractor, corneal pachymetry, Humphrey visual field, Goldmann visual field, OCT, HRT, Lenstar). - Patient Services:
Apply ocular dressings and shields, follow protocols for eye drop instillation, label bottles, understand dilation indications/contraindications, measure interpupillary distance, evaluate spectacle fit, assist disabled patients, adhere to drug sample regulations. - Basic Tonometry:
Perform accurate Goldmann applanation tonometry, Tono‑pen tonometry, Eye Care tonometry, understand principles of scleral rigidity. - Instrument Maintenance:
Perform routine maintenance on all ophthalmic equipment, stock exam rooms, disinfect and maintain rooms. - General Medical Knowledge:
Maintain CPR certification, understand ocular anatomy, systemic diseases, emergencies, microbial control. - Complete required JHMI courses:
Self‑learning packets, HIPAA, Conflict of Interest, Annual Review paperwork, software training (Epic, POE, TAP, Forum, Oculab, Allscripts), assist physician chair side as a scribe. - Possible Additional
Duties And Responsibilities:
Surgical assisting with minor outpatient procedures, basic slit lamp evaluation, measure axial length with A‑scan biometry, protocol refractometry, instruct patients in contact lens care, neuro‑physiologic testing (ERG, MFERG, VEP, SLO), other duties.
- High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
- Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date.
- CPR certification required.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience; additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
