  • The Mira Costa College Career Studies Department seeks an experienced associate career counselor to provide career counseling to students participating in the District's ACP Success Teams and to provide resources, guidance, and support to the members of ACP Success Teams. The ACP Success Teams are the primary mechanism through which the District's Redesigning the Student Experience work is being achieved as it seeks to institutionalize the researched best practices of Guided Pathways.
Target

Population & Mission
  • Mira Costa's ACP Success Teams were developed to provide support to the college's disproportionately impacted students. Data from the college's Office of Research, Planning, and Institutional Effectiveness show that first-time in college students who are Latinx, African-American/Black, and over 25 years of age can benefit from outreach, interventions, and a holistic team approach.
Responsibilities
  • The associate career counselor will work closely with the members of six cross-divisional Academic and Career Pathways (ACP) Success Teams. The role includes planning and coordinating support services, events, speakers, etc., that promote student career exploration, in alignment with regional career development initiatives.
  • Provide career counseling to ACP students, including assessment, major exploration, occupational exploration, and career clarity, and may be assigned to teach career and life planning classes.
  • Be housed in the Career Center within the Instructional Services Division and receive guidance and support from the career and life planning discipline specialist and department chair.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • 1) Master’s degree in counseling, career development, educational counseling, guidance counseling, counseling psychology, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, or related fields; or
  • 2) Master’s degree in Education with a Counseling concentration; or
  • 3) Bachelor’s degree in a listed field and a California Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) license; or
  • 4) Valid California Community College Credential in the discipline; or
  • 5) Equivalent to the above.
  • AND have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community college students.
  • Note:

  • Desirable

    Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of culturally relevant counseling theories; experience with disproportionately impacted students; familiarity with Guided Pathways; ability to collaborate cross-divisions; experience with case management and events; bilingual English/Spanish; experience coordinating ACP-related events and panels.
Other Required Details
  • Basic Function:
    Under direction, provide counseling services to students from diverse backgrounds; develop education plans; teach counseling courses when assigned; provide feedback and evaluate student performance.
  • Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Working Arrangements & Conditions
  • Physical Effort:
    Primarily sedentary with occasional movement; ability to lift up to 25 pounds; travel to district locations as needed.
  • Emotional Effort:
    Maintain effective working relationships; work under pressure with deadlines.
  • Working Conditions:

    Primary in classroom and office environments; occasional evenings/weekends; local travel possible.
