The City of Oceanside is accepting applications for Senior Building Inspector. The Senior Building Inspector leads and manages the Building Inspection Team and oversees the most technical building inspections in the field to ensure conformance with established building codes. This position provides functional and technical supervision of the Building Inspection staff in the enforcement of building, mechanical, plumbing, and electric codes and regulations governing the construction process.
Responsibilities include researching building codes, product listings, and manuals; maintaining code and standards references; meeting with and advising architects, engineers, contractors, homeowners and the public regarding building projects; responding to questions and inquiries; interpreting City building codes and regulations; and interpreting building code issues with building inspection and code enforcement staff. The Senior Building Inspector provides functional and technical supervision of the Building Inspector staff — assigning, monitoring, and reviewing work;
trains staff in building inspection methods, procedures, and techniques; develops and delivers training programs; plans and schedules work assignments; recommends staffing and equipment needs; and performs inspections of complex commercial tenant improvements, large residential developments, and custom homes. The Senior Building Inspector also collaborates with code enforcement staff to clarify and resolve building code issues.

- Maintain complete and accurate records of inspections.
- Perform building inspection duties on the most complex projects under construction.
- Respond to requests, complaints and inquiries from the general public.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in building inspection, including experience with complex residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects. Experience should demonstrate increasing responsibility, including lead or supervisory duties, and comprehensive knowledge of building codes, regulations, and inspection procedures.
Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License, Certificate- Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license.
- Possession of the following valid ICC certifications (Minimum Requirements):
- Commercial Building Inspector – B2
- Residential Building Inspector – B1
Office and field environment to conduct building inspections; exposure to computer screens; inclement weather conditions; construction sites; extensive public contact.
Physical ConditionsEssential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, walking and standing for prolonged periods of time; speaking and hearing to exchange information; visual acuity to read and interpret specifications and drawings and to conduct building inspections.
