Summary
Under general supervision, the Permit Coordinator manages computerized building and zoning permit systems and ensures efficient coordination of these systems across multiple town departments. This role serves as the primary point of contact for applicants and internal reviewers, facilitating timely permit processing, compliance with applicable codes, and accurate reporting.

Knowledge- Operations, services and daily flow of a Building Department.
- Methods and techniques of calculating fees for services.
- Rules, regulations, policies and procedures in assigned programs.
- Principles of filing and record keeping.
- Proper syntax usage, spelling, punctuation and grammar.
- Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
- Perform a variety of complex or specialized office duties in a Building Department.
- Type at a speed necessary for successful job completion if assigned.
- Prepare business letters and memoranda.
- Explain policies and procedures involving various permits.
- Maintain a variety of files and records.
- Review and process documents.
- Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Interpret and explain Town policies and procedures.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Maintain physical & mental ability to perform assigned duties.
- Monitor permit application workflows and track progress through all review and approval stages.
- Enter and update initial permit information in the permit tracking software accurately and in a timely manner.
- Coordinate and expedite information and approvals among internal departments (e.g., Planning, Engineering, Fire, Health) and external reviewing agencies.
- Act as liaison between applicants, contractors, internal reviewers, and external agencies to ensure clear communication and resolution of issues.
- Respond to public and applicant inquiries in person, by phone, or electronically, providing accurate information and guidance on permit requirements and procedures.
- Assist with general clerical duties as needed, including copying, faxing, filing, scanning, and mail distribution.
- Be willing to serve the residents of the Town of Ocean City as a loyal and trusted Public Servant.

Education and/or ExperienceRequired
- High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a comparable position
Preferred
- Vocational training
- Relevant coursework in building construction, governmental codes, or database management
- Valid driver's license
- ICC Permit Technician certification (must obtain within two (2) years of hire)
Ability to read and interpret documents such as the Municipal Code as well as technical journals and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from citizens, regulatory agencies or members of the business community. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from board and commission members, customers and the general public.
MathematicalSkills
Basic arithmetic skills; ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Ability to compute rate ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
