Job Summary

The Town of Ocean City, MD is hiring for a Wastewater Laboratory Technician I or II. This position will assist laboratory supervisors in performing chemical and bacteriological analysis.

Wastewater Laboratory Technician I – $52,998 - $67,579 Annually

Wastewater Laboratory Technician II – $58,427 - $74,786 Annually

Responsibilities Wastewater Laboratory Technician I
  • Performance of water and wastewater analysis by approved USEPA methods under the supervision of either the Laboratory Supervisor or the Laboratory Technician II.
  • Work independently when necessary.
  • Media preparation; glassware washing, operation of instrumentation and its calibration where required; preparation of standards; collection of water and wastewater samples; logging in and tracking of samples as they proceed through the analytical process; maintenance of instrumentation as required by quality assurance program; general laboratory support tasks.
  • Participate in water/wastewater training events as available to advance laboratory skills and knowledge.
  • This position is considered “essential personnel” and must report even during storm events and other town emergencies.
Wastewater Laboratory Technician II
  • Performance of water and wastewater analysis by approved USEPA methods under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor.
  • Work independently when necessary.
  • Media preparation; glassware washing, operation of instrumentation and its calibration where required; preparation of standards; collection of water and wastewater samples; logging in and tracking of samples as they proceed through the analytical process; maintenance of instrumentation as required by quality assurance program; general laboratory support tasks.
  • Participate in water/wastewater training events as available to advance laboratory skills and knowledge.
  • Assist in training of the Laboratory Technician I.
  • This position is considered “essential personnel” and must report even during storm events and other town emergencies.
Qualifications Wastewater Laboratory Technician I

Education, Experience, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four‑year college or university in Chemistry, Biology or related field
  • Obtain laboratory certification status with the State of Maryland Laboratories Administration within one year of start of employment, and maintain that status once received
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred

  • Experience in a water or wastewater laboratory
Wastewater Laboratory Technician II

Education, Experience, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four‑year college or university in Chemistry, Biology or related field
  • Minimum two (2) years experience as a Laboratory Technician I
  • Maintain laboratory certification status with the State of Maryland Laboratories Administration
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred

  • Experience in a water or wastewater laboratory
Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other

Skills and Abilities

Ability to perform water and wastewater analysis by approved USEPA methods. Work within the Maryland Laboratory Administration certification rules and regulations.
