The Work You Will Do

Highway Maintenance Technician II – District Five / Ocala Maintenance

In this role, you are key to FDOT’s focus on maintaining Florida roads and bridges free and clear of hazards/unsafe conditions. Top duties include clearing off debris, applying repairs in roads, shoulders, sidewalks, and ditches, trimming trees, closing off roads and guiding traffic following accidents or in smoke/fire conditions, plus installing and replacing roadway signage. You will be on the front lines of road maintenance in crews that ensure the traveling public has full, unencumbered access to all of Florida’s roadways in blue skies and after extreme weather events.

In addition to regularly scheduled work, this job will require 24/7 emergency response, particularly pre and post hurricanes impacting any and all areas of the state.

Your Specific Responsibilities

Oversees crews performing maintenance activities. Upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license; operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck. Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating. Cleans and washes equipment.

Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.

Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.

Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).

Success Candidate Skills
  • Operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Operating and performing pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles and/or mechanized equipment that they are operating.
