Mechanical Engineer

Posted on March 03, 2026 by Employer details Vital Bio

About you: You are a Mechanical Engineer who enjoys building, testing, and refining complex electromechanical systems. You?re comfortable working across mechatronics, fluidics, thermal control, optics, and instrument hardware, and you like being close to the bench?designing fixtures, running experiments, and digging into data. You work well in cross?functional teams, communicate clearly, and can take a project from concept through test results with a high degree of independence.

You?re excited by the opportunity to help develop a point-of-care diagnostic instrument in a fast-paced, highly collaborative startup environment.

What You?ll Do:
  • Design and execute experiments to evaluate mechanical designs and manufacturing procedures for an integrated POC instrument.
  • Analyze experimental data, apply appropriate statistical and engineering methods, and interpret results to form clear, independent conclusions.
  • Develop simple scripts or tools to analyze and report on experimental data.
  • Prepare and present results to the broader team in a concise, structured way.
  • Create and release protocols, work instructions, and technical reports to support development and verification activities.
  • Design and develop test fixtures, jigs, and tools to support R&D, troubleshooting, and validation.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, software/firmware, consumables, and assay teams to ensure mechanical designs meet system-level requirements.
What You?ll Need:
  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical, Industrial, or Biomedical Engineering (or related discipline).
  • 1+ year of experience in engineering product design in a regulated environment; medical device experience preferred.
  • Proven ability to execute projects independently from planning through analysis and communication of results.
  • Experience determining testing strategies and methodologies for mechanical subsystems or devices.
  • Strong analytical and problem?solving skills, with comfort working from first principles and from data.
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and contribute across a wide range of hands-on and analytical tasks.
  • Experience with design of experiments (DOE) and hands?on fixture/device design is a strong plus.
Bonus points for:
  • Familiarity with at least one hands-on biology technique (e.g., ELISA, PCR, cell culture).
  • Understanding of design control and quality system requirements (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 13485).
  • Experience with rapid prototyping tools (3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining).
  • Comfort with test and measurement equipment (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes, force/temperature/pressure gauges, calipers, micrometers, dial indicators).
  • An appreciation for puns and contributing to a positive, curious team culture.
Why Join Us?
  • Help build next?generation point?of?care diagnostics that aim to make high?quality testing more accessible to everyone.
  • You?ll work on a complex, multidisciplinary instrument where your designs and experiments directly influence product performance and reliability.
  • You?ll collaborate daily with scientists, engineers, and operators in an environment that values initiative, clear thinking, and thoughtful execution.
  • We offer competitive compensation, flexible time off, and support for your well?being?along with the opportunity to grow your skills quickly, have real ownership, and see your work make a tangible impact.

Compensation will be determined based on the individual?s demonstrated experience, education, training, relevant certifications or licensure, and other applicable business and organizational factors.
