Position Summary

The Advance Practice Professional (APP) is a clinical/surgical expert who completes comprehensive patient health evaluations and collaborates with the clinical/faculty team. The APP assesses educational and psychosocial needs of surgical patients and caretakers, develops and reviews plans of care, coordinates discharge planning, and performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The APP participates in all aspects of global management of surgical patients throughout the system and helps educate residents, medical and nursing students.

Minimum Qualifications – Nurse Practitioner
  • Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
  • National certification by an APRN Certification Center.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure in the state of practice.
  • RNFA certification required for First Assist privileging.
  • BLS certification required;
    Advanced Life Support training as directed by the department.
Minimum Qualifications – Physician Assistant
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree as Physician Assistant.
  • Graduate of an ARC‑PA approved PA training program.
  • Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure in the state of practice.
  • BLS certification required;
    Advanced Life Support training as directed by the department.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ACNP or FNP for nurse practitioners.
  • Master’s level degree as Physician Assistant.
  • Experience in acute care, surgical, critical care, or trauma settings.
  • New graduates also considered.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage comprehensive, individualized care for surgical patients and families inpatient and post‑discharge.
  • Complete daily rounds, pre‑procedure evaluations, integrated assessments, and diagnostics per guidelines.
  • Order tests and consults; communicate results to clinical staff.
  • Facilitate patient discharge and coordinate outpatient follow‑up services.
  • Perform procedures within scope of practice for vascular surgery.
  • Develop individualized care plans, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals.
  • Participate in physician rounds, identify complex care situations, and initiate interventions.
  • Assist data collection, outcome measurement, and research participation.
  • Mentor nursing personnel, provide educational programs, and serve as a resource for staff.
  • Contribute to quality improvement activities, performance improvement plans, and clinical data analysis.
  • Document all care and interventions accurately following hospital policies.
Physical Requirements

The role requires lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, and standing for prolonged periods; handling patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40+ pounds.

Working Environment

Work closely with others; irregular or protracted hours; exposure to biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased patient care, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient‑care equipment.

Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency with computers.
  • Strong communication skills.
