Qualifications
- Holds current Maine Department of Education Criminal History Records Check
- Holds Teacher of Students with Disabilities (282) endorsement
- Holds Administrator of Special Education (030), Assistant Administrator of Special Education (035) or Special Education Consultant (079) endorsement
- At least five (5) years of teaching experience and educational background in the area of academic and social/emotional behavioral needs of children
- Knowledge of federal and state special education and 504 regulations, processes, and paperwork
- Understanding of developmental characteristics of children with disabilities
- Awareness of current research, trends in curriculum, best practices, and instructional strategies for special education and 504 students
- Ability to collect, analyze, and use data to inform assessment and instruction aligned with curriculum
- Collaborative practices and communication skills to work with individuals and groups representing diverse perspectives
- Experience with education referral, assessment, and programming in accordance with state regulations and district policies, and at the direction of the Director of Special Services
- Ability to assist teachers in examining teaching practices to effectively meet the needs of all students and prevent unnecessary referrals to special education
- Experience mentoring new special education teachers (case management) and related service personnel
- Provide instructional guidance and teacher leadership within the school setting
- Provide recommendations to and ongoing collaboration with teachers to implement strategies for students with academic or behavioral needs
- Consult with general education (tier 1, tier2, and tier3) and special education teachers around scientifically based researched instructional strategies and methodologies
- Meet with teachers to review IEPs and/or testing at the beginning of the year and as concerns arise
- Participate in the school pre-referral team to provide information and expertise on Response to Intervention (RTI)
- Participate in placement and transition meetings for students placed at special purpose private schools
- Assist with special education assessments, class observations, and functional behavior assessments, as appropriate
- Communicate with administrative and district office staff regarding necessary census, finance, personnel and program data
- Assist with the supervision and evaluation of probationary and continuing contract special education personnel and educational technicians
- Facilitate and serve as administrator in IEP Team meetings
- Prepare and deliver reports, plans and program descriptions as requested by school and district administrators
