Rec Well - Personal Trainer (Non-Certified) (Winter 2025)

Non-Certified Personal Trainers work under the supervision of a Fitness Coordinator, another Certified Personal Trainer on staff, or a School of Health Sciences professor to design and deliver individualized fitness programs that help clients achieve their health and wellness goals. This role provides hands‑on experience for students pursuing a personal training certification, offering opportunities to gain practical skills in fitness assessment, program design, and client engagement.

Non-Certified Personal Trainers motivate and educate clients while fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. All training activities are conducted under supervision to ensure client safety, instructional quality, and adherence to industry standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in using a variety of fitness equipment.
  • Demonstrate positive customer service experiences.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Must be currently or previously enrolled in Exercise Science (EXS) 4100, Intro to Personal Training, with Jillian Prantera
  • Demonstrate foundational knowledge of health and fitness concepts.
  • Ability to Work Independently:
    Proven track record of effectively managing time and tasks with minimal supervision while consistently meeting deadlines and achieving goals.
  • Strong Communication

    Skills:

    Excellent verbal and written communication abilities and demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders.
  • Attention to Detail:
    Exceptional focus on accuracy and thoroughness, ensuring that all tasks are completed with care. Skilled in identifying potential errors or areas for improvement in processes.
  • Professionalism:
    Maintains a high standard of professionalism in all interactions, demonstrating respect, courtesy, and a positive attitude in fast‑paced environments.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Greet and engage with clients to promote a welcoming environment.
  • Provide information about the fitness center.
  • Educate patrons on proper equipment use and exercise technique.
  • Work directly with assigned clients to deliver training sessions and track progress.
  • Conduct Fitness Assessments under supervision of the Fitness Coordinator or certified trainer (may perform independently upon approval).
  • Create individualized training programs with oversight and approval from the Fitness Coordinator and School of Health Sciences professor.
  • Provide appropriate care in emergency situations as stated in the Emergency Action Plan.
  • Enforce all Recreation Center policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work with a variety of age groups and demographics.
  • Think quickly, creatively, and without judgment to solve problems and find positive solutions when conflict arises.
  • Attend all required trainings, evaluations, and performance check‑ins.

COMPENSATION
  • $18/hour
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must be available to work a variety of shifts, including nights, weekends, and early mornings.
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings and trainings.
  • Act in accordance with Clery Act as a mandated reporter and carry out responsibilities in reporting a crime on campus as a University Recreation and Well‑Being staff member.
  • Must be enrolled part‑time, at least 6 credit hours per semester for undergraduate students and 4 credit hours for graduate students at Oakland University.
  • Maintain certification through a reputable, nationally accredited organization recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
  • Must obtain American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification upon hire
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
PATH TO CERTIFICATION
  • This position is designed to support students on their journey toward earning a nationally recognized personal training certification (NASM, ACE, ACSM, or NSCA).
  • Within 60 days of employment, the student will select a certifying organization (approved by University Recreation & Well‑Being).
  • Within six months of employment, the student must sit for their chosen certification exam.
  • If the exam is not passed on the first attempt, the student must reschedule within the timeframe provided by the certifying organization.
  • Once certified, the trainer must complete a minimum of 30 hours of paid personal training sessions with University Recreation & Well‑Being.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
  • Personal Trainers report directly to the Fitness Coordinator.
  • Personal Trainers report indirectly to the Fitness Team Lead and Assistant Director of Fitness and Well‑Being.
  • Additionally, Personal Trainers may receive on‑duty requests or instruction from any Rec Well professional staff member.
