Maintenance Technician / Mechanic

Transit Vehicle Electronic Technicians work as part of a skilled maintenance team responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing electronic and electro‑mechanical systems on BART revenue vehicles. Under general supervision, technicians perform preventive maintenance, diagnose faults, repair and replace components, and verify system functionality for propulsion, train control, braking, HVAC, communications, door control, lighting, and auxiliary electrical systems.

SEIU Maintenance Worker III – Hourly rate: $42.72 (Step 76) to $55.84 (Step 99). External candidates will start at Step 76.

Key Responsibilities- Perform scheduled inspections and preventive maintenance of electronic and electro‑mechanical systems on transit vehicles.
- Troubleshoot and repair propulsion, train control, braking, HVAC, communications, door control, lighting, and auxiliary electrical systems.
- Respond to vehicle operating issues in the field and perform field repairs.
- Interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and work orders.
- Use diagnostic test equipment and precision measuring tools.
- Document all work performed in compliance with established standards.
- Work during non‑revenue hours and adhere to safety standards and regulatory requirements.
- Associate in Science degree in electronics from an accredited community college or an equivalent electronics credential.
- Four (4) years of verifiable full‑time work experience in electronic maintenance can substitute for the education requirement.
- Must possess adequate color vision.
- Physically capable of working in confining work spaces and lifting equipment weighing up to 70 pounds.
- Willingness to work weekends, holidays, off‑hour shifts and occasional emergency overtime.
- Ability to climb ladders to perform railcar maintenance work.
- Basic operating principles of analog and digital electronics, electrical and electronic circuitry, and associated mechanical mechanisms.
- Use of testing, power, and hand tools for troubleshooting and diagnostic techniques.
- Shop arithmetic and safety practices pertinent to the work.
- All SEIU members must follow the “Bid Form Process.”
- The Talent Acquisition Division will screen bids/applications against the minimum qualifications.
- Qualified candidates may undergo a skills/performance test, written exam, panel interview, or other assessment.
