Consumer Safety Inspector – California (Sign‑on Bonus $5K)
We are hiring Consumer Safety Inspectors (entry‑level to experienced) for USDA/FSIS in California (Anaheim, Compton, Hayward, Manteca, Oakland, San Leandro). The position is open to U.S. Citizens.

- Schedule: Shift and species vary by assignment; detailed to any shift in the Alameda District.

- Salary: $40,332 – $79,443 per year (GS‑1862 series, locality pay).
- Location: Compton, Hayward, Manteca, Oakland, San Leandro (CA).
- Telework: No.

- Inspect regulated establishments to ensure safe product through compliance checks, non‑compliance documentation, and enforcement actions.
- Verify and enforce SSOP and HACCP plans, maintain records, and conduct hands‑on verification.
- Assess plant corrective actions, identify trends, and initiate enforcement where warranted.
- Provide guidance to plant managers, owners, and staff on legal, regulatory requirements, and compliance plans.
- Communicate and defend determinations on non‑compliance and assist in resolving problems.
- Advise agency inspectors, supervisors, and officers on inspection and enforcement matters.
- Conduct sampling, surveys, and testing for microbiological contaminants and residues.
- Authorize entry of imported products and coordinate with other federal agencies (APHIS, CBP).
- Training as a condition of employment (TCOE) – begin within 90 days, complete within 12 months.
- Successful background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
- Probationary period (12 months) may apply.
- Pre‑employment medical examination.
- Final documents (I‑9, E‑Verify, OF‑306) as required.
- English proficiency (read, speak, write).
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Willingness to provide mandatory government identification.
- Physical and medical ability to perform essential job functions without risk to self or others.
- Ability to stand, walk on uneven floors, climb stairs and ladders, lift up to 50 lbs.
- Manual dexterity, good vision (20/40 or better), color discrimination, and hearing adequate for job.
- For GS‑5 level: minimum 52 weeks of supervised experience in food inspection or related roles.
- For GS‑7 level: independent routine duties experience; 52 weeks of independent work.
- For GS‑8 level: one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑7; knowledge of SSOP, HACCP, basic mathematics and sampling.
- For GS‑9 level: one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑8; independent decision‑making and coverage of multiple sites.
- Education may substitute for experience based on equivalency rules described per grade level.
- $5,000 sign‑on bonus (requires signed two‑year service agreement).
