Position Summary

The focus of this position is to provide clinical behavioral health treatment and educational services (i.e., psychotherapy, crisis services and groups under licensed supervision by a Psychologist) to American Indians, Alaska Natives, and other residents of the surrounding community in Oakland. Secondary duties may also include intakes, assessments, medical department consultation, and support of outreach/ prevention activities and community events. Our team is a diverse and collaborative group that uses empirically supported methods integrated with positive, traditional cultural practices.

Learning and professional growth are priorities in our department and especially for this position. We support these efforts via (1) regular and structured individual and group supervision, (2) encouragement of on-the-fly consultation, (3) clinical training opportunities (seminars, clinical trainings and certification, and a vast library of webinars from the Indian Health Service), (4) immersive cultural learning activities in the community, and (5) opportunities to develop clinic administration/supervision or other skills.

Our operational processes and onboarding trainings are shaped by continuous quality improvement and Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles.

The Native American Health Center is an accredited institution and adheres to the standards of excellence set forth by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA)

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Under licensed supervision, provide medically necessary, treatment plan driven, and culturally proficient behavioral health treatment services for people presenting with a broad range of psychological conditions. Treatment services include and are not limited to individual and group therapy for adults, child/youth therapy, crisis intervention, and behavior management services. Treatment plans are client-driven and strengths-based, and consistent with recognized best practices.
  • Conduct clinical intakes and behavioral health assessments including biopsychosocial, cultural, diagnostic, and crisis/risk evaluations for a broad spectrum of psychological conditions. Includes scheduled appointments, “warm handoffs,” and drop-in services.
  • Provide case management and service linkages, including facilitating urgent or emergency service referrals to medical/psychiatric staff/agencies, mobile crisis services, and the police.
  • Create and update service plans for clients based on their identified goals, strengths cultural perspectives, and holistic needs, using recognized best practices.
  • Provide clinical consultation/liaison services and education for staff, projects, and departments.
  • Participate in required administrative, clinical, and educational/training meetings including rounds, team huddles, supervision meetings, and trainings.
  • Document and track service activities in the electronic health record system (Epic) and perform other documentation necessary to support grants, contracts, and other reporting needs. This must be done in a thorough, accurate, secure, and timely manner in accordance with agency policy and procedure.
  • Actively contribute to quality assurance and improvement (QA/QI) projects and initiatives.
  • Ensure maximal quality of services and compliance with the mission and strategic goals of the organization, federal and state laws and regulations, agency policy and procedure, accreditation standards, applicable professional standards, and supervisor/team expectation and/or assigned duties. This includes maintaining current professional knowledge and skill.
  • Member Care:
    Demonstrate understanding and apply working knowledge of safety policies and ensuring safe member practices.
  • Employee Safety:
    Safely performs all duties; follows required protective protocols to ensure personal safety as well the safety of others.
  • Must maintain compliance with ergonomic safety standards; be mindful of posture and regularly practice ergonomic stretches.
  • Quality Improvement:
    Actively participate in internal quality improvement teams and work with members proactively to drive quality improvement initiatives in accordance with the mission and strategic goals of the organization, federal and state laws and regulations, and accreditation standards, when assigned.
  • Work well under pressure, meet multiple and often competing deadlines.
  • At all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with supervisors, subordinates, colleagues, clients and the community.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
