The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) seeks a highly motivated and technically skilled Maintenance Engineer to support the reliability, safety, and long-term performance of the District’s rail system and supporting infrastructure. The role supports maintenance programs across Transportation, Maintenance & Engineering, and Rolling Stock & Shops, analyzes asset performance, develops maintenance strategies, and collaborates with operations, field maintenance staff, and engineering teams to improve equipment reliability, reduce service disruptions, and ensure regulatory and safety compliance.
As BART advances major capital and modernization programs, this role translates engineering standards and asset management principles into practical, field-ready maintenance solutions.
- Provide engineering support for maintenance programs across Transportation, Maintenance & Engineering, and Rolling Stock & Shops.
- Analyze asset performance and develop maintenance strategies to improve reliability and reduce service disruptions.
- Collaborate with operations, field maintenance staff, and engineering teams to ensure compliance with regulatory and safety requirements.
- Translate engineering standards and asset management principles into practical maintenance solutions for modernization and capital programs.
- Enhance asset reliability and lifecycle performance through data-driven maintenance strategies and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Develop maintenance plans for new and upgraded infrastructure, equipment, and technologies to support system reinvestment and modernization.
- Strengthen safety and regulatory compliance by ensuring maintenance practices meet applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
- Improve coordination between engineering and field maintenance for maintainable designs and efficient execution.
- Leverage data and analytics to identify trends, reduce failures, and optimize preventive and corrective maintenance programs.
- Support workforce readiness by developing technical guidance, procedures, and training for maintenance personnel.
- Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
- Experience: The equivalent of two (2) years of full-time professional experience in preventative maintenance systems, equipment operational performance and reliability, or a closely related field.
- Substitution: Additional professional experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
- Knowledge &
Skills:
Knowledge of reliability-centered maintenance, reliability engineering concepts, rail system operations, data collection and analysis, root cause analysis, statistical methods, EAM systems, and related codes/regulations. - Abilities: Performing reliability engineering and analysis, data collection and analysis, reliability testing, problem-solving, planning and scheduling, and effective written and oral communication.
