Hours:
202 days / 7.5 hours per day - Salary: $18.66 to $30.74 per hour
Basic function:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of students, support students with disabilities to meet IEP goals, attend to physical and health needs, monitor progress, perform clerical duties, and provide classroom management support.
- Deaf and Hard of Hearing Para‑Educator: Assist instruction using ASL, PSE, MCE; communicate proficiently.
- Visual Impairment Para‑Educator: Assist instruction; read Braille; operate supportive equipment and assist navigation.
- Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to students (Pre‑K through Young Adult) and in Special Day Class or other programs.
- Read IEP goals to support instruction.
- Communicate with teachers and parents regarding progress and IEP objectives.
- Implement behavior strategies to maintain a safe learning environment.
- Assist with lesson plans, reinforce instruction, monitor drills and assignments.
- Assist students with personal hygiene tasks (washing, toileting, diapering, dressing).
- Assist with transportation and repositioning of students using medical equipment.
- Assist with loading/unloading on buses and vehicles.
- Provide basic first aid and specialized health care as directed.
- Monitor behavior of students, report progress, follow behavior intervention plans.
- Perform clerical duties: prepare instructional materials, record grades, maintain attendance, keep student files.
- Set up work areas, operate audio‑visual equipment, distribute supplies.
- Administer and score tests and assignments.
- Assist students in developing self‑help, social and communication skills.
- Respond to emergencies.
- Assist with supervision during recess and field trips.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records.
- Participate in staff meetings and professional development.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Associate of Arts degree or higher, or 48+ college units, or qualifying test score.
- One year of classroom experience working with children of various age levels.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certificates.
- Willingness to complete required training.
- Valid California driver’s license (if applicable).
- Ability to lift and assist students up to 50 pounds.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of special education standards, disability categories, behavior strategies, and classroom management.
- Ability to assist with visual impairment tasks (reading Braille, operating assistive devices) or Deaf/Hard of Hearing tasks (using sign language).
- Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
- Assist with instruction and reinforcement.
- Quick arithmetic and communication in English.
- Assist with daily activities and use of assistive technology.
- Maintain safety and health practices.
- Use technology and computer software.
- Work independently with proper supervision.
- Maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to diverse backgrounds.
- Perform first aid and emergency response.
Office, diverse school site, classroom environments; driving vehicle to conduct work; fast‑paced work; constant interruptions; may need to physically guide or restrain students; potential contact with blood and other body fluids and communicable diseases.
Physical RequirementsMust be able to sit or stand for extended periods; walk on uneven terrain; lift, carry, push, and pull objects up to 50 pounds; bend, twist, reach overhead; use both hands; vision and hearing adequate for classroom communication.
