These general functions will be carried out in keeping with the Goals, Policies and Mission of the YMCA of the East Bay. The Group Assistant will actively support Group Leaders in supervising students to ensure their physical and emotional safety. They will support with the facilitation of daily activities that are meaningful, culturally relevant and engaging for all students. Activities may include but aren’t limited to: homework help, data driven academic skill building, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math), English language arts, structured physical activities and/or sports and visual and performing arts.

Group Assistants maintain positive relationships with all stakeholders and participate in creating a high-quality program based on proven methods, district goals and the YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility and caring.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Support in supervising students at all times to help ensure their physical and emotional safety.
  • Assist with engaging groups of youth in program activities that are developmentally appropriate, culturally relevant, meaningful, and aligned with YMCA core values.
  • Help maintain and submit accurate attendance records.
  • Participate in and support the planning and execution of program events and activities.
  • Work collaboratively with the program team to maintain program quality, safety, cleanliness, and accident prevention standards.
  • Provide homework help and academic skill-building support when needed.
  • Communicate proactively with the supervisor regarding program operations, including student progress, behavior, and any incidents or injuries. Follow all YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to child abuse prevention, dress code, cell phone use, campus safety, and emergency protocols. Attend and actively participate in required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Build positive, respectful relationships with students, families, school-day staff, district personnel, and YMCA team members. Model strong relationship-building and conflict-resolution skills in all interactions.
  • Support the use of consistent, age-appropriate discipline strategies that reinforce positive behaviors.
  • Demonstrate reliability, flexibility, sound judgment, and professionalism in all responsibilities, including punctuality, confidentiality, and meeting deadlines.
  • Fulfill other job duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities
  • Must occasionally lift up to 30 lbs
  • Able to walk for long periods of time
  • Visual ability to clearly monitor activities in both indoor and outdoor settings
  • Mobility to quickly respond to emergencies

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M ust have (a) 48 semester college units, or (b) successful completion of the Instructional Aid (IA) Exam
  • Experience working with youth in a similar environment preferred
  • Demonstrate a love of working with youth and an interest in being a positive role-model for others
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Must have general knowledge of core elementary and middle school subjects
  • Must possess strong classroom and behavioral management skills
  • M ust be able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Must pass DOJ/FBI criminal background check
  • TB Test Clearance
  • At least 18 years of age
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date
