Overview
The Controller will oversee all accounting and financial operations for a small manufacturing company, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and efficient processes. This role is hands-on and requires experience in manufacturing accounting, including cost accounting and inventory management. The Controller will partner closely with the CFO and ownership to support decision-making and drive financial discipline.
Responsibilities- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and month-end close
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Manage cost accounting, inventory valuation, standard costing, and variance analysis
- Maintain and improve inventory controls, bill of materials (BOMs), and work-in-process (WIP) reporting
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
- Ensure timely and accurate sales tax, property tax, and other regulatory filings
- Coordinate with external CPA firms on audits, reviews, and tax filings
- Develop and maintain internal controls and accounting policies
- Support operational leadership with financial analysis, margin analysis, and KPI reporting
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and system enhancements
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff (if applicable)
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA or CMA preferred)
- 7–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, within manufacturing
- Strong knowledge of cost accounting, inventory, and manufacturing operations
- Experience with ERP or manufacturing accounting systems
- Solid understanding of GAAP and financial reporting
- Hands-on, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a lean environment
- Strong communication skills with the ability to partner cross-functionally
- Small to mid-sized manufacturing company background
- Experience building or improving accounting processes
