Description:
This position is for an ICU Registered Nurse.
The unit typically consists of 5 rooms, with 4 rooms usually in use.
The 5th room serves as a recovery area for after hours.
The average daily census generally is 1 patient.
Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:2.
There are 2 RNs on staff, with charge included in this number.
Common patient diagnoses include medical management, basic surgeries, and conditions such as appendicitis, cholecystitis, small bowel obstruction, heart failure, pneumonia, alcoholism, and minimal cases of diabetes requiring insulin drips.
No pediatric patients are admitted to the unit.
The RN is expected to titrate drips as needed.
Common medications for titration include Amigo, Cardizem, Precedex, Leva, and insulin.
A Charge Nurse is present on each shift and takes patients as well.
There are no nurse aides or patient care technicians on this unit.
A Hospitalist is available on-site 24/7.
Respiratory therapy is also available 24/7 for the entire facility, with one RT assigned.
The ICU primarily uses ventilators, CPAP, and BiPAP, but rarely has patients requiring ventilation.
RNs are responsible for reading and interpreting their own cardiac strips.
Shifts are scheduled from 6:00 PM to 6:30 AM.
Self-scheduling is permitted, although management will balance the final schedule.
Every other weekend shift is required.
Two major holidays are also required.
Floating to other units may occur, such as Med Surg and ED, as needed, with rare instances of floating to PACU for recovery.
There are no specific scrub colors required as long as the attire is clean and professional.
Unit-specific orientation consists of 1-2 days.
