Overview
The Advanced Engineering Technologies (AET) Group is seeking a dedicated CAD drafter/designer to support our organization. The position will involve machine design and process engineering in a research and development atmosphere. Projects range from creating new 3D models based on conceptual (whiteboard) designs and cleaning up legacy prints, to participating in large design reviews.
AET resides within the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the National Security Sciences Directorate. The NND contributes world‑class research, technology development, risk assessment, and systems analysis related to nonproliferation and counter proliferation. The group focuses on developing advanced approaches to operation, characterization, and analysis of nuclear fuel cycle processes and collaborates with staff from other groups within NND and ORNL to meet sponsor needs.
MajorDuties & Responsibilities
- Develop complex 3D models, 2D fabrication prints, P&IDs, etc.
- Coordinate with fabrication shops to increase manufacturability.
- Manage Solidworks/AutoCAD infrastructure.
- Contribute to engineering deliverables such as drawings, reports, specifications, and studies.
- Develop and apply an understanding of industry codes and standard practices.
- Document work performed in the forms of work instructions, drawings, and models.
- Work flexible hours and travel domestically as needed.

- Associate’s degree in electrical, systems, process, or mechanical engineering technology and five (5) years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with solid modeling and design software packages.
- Machine design, fabrication, and/or tooling design experience.
- Experience in an R&D and/or testing environment.
- Demonstrated design and process team experience, and experience in process development & control.
- Experience maintaining high levels of process documentation and quality assurance.
- Experience with AutoCAD software suite (electrical, plant 3D, etc.).
- Experience with Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Vault Professional.
- Active DOE‑Q or TS/SCI Clearance.
The candidate is expected to effectively interact with ORNL staff and internal/external sponsors, work in a team environment, document work in technical reports, papers, and presentations, and participate in development of research proposals. Excellent communication skills (verbal, presentation, and writing) are required. The successful candidate will interface with principal investigators, management, engineers, fabricators, modelers, and test campaign personnel.
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance from the Department of Energy. It is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position, requiring a pre‑placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
