About the RoleThe ideal candidate will be familiar with industrial electronics (IE) design, modern power electronics (PE) circuit design, modern PE devices (SCRs, IGBTs, MOSFETs, etc.), and electronics manufacturing. The incumbent must be able to create engineering solutions meeting programmatic objectives considering cost and schedule as well as technical requirements. The incumbent must be able to analyze a variety of electrical engineering problems using traditional analytical methods and other simulation techniques including such tools as PSPICE, MATLAB, Simulink, and OrCAD.
Incumbent will be based in Oak Ridge, TN and periodically travel to Piketon, OH. Travel is anticipated to be 10%.
- Initial area of focus will be the deployment of new machine control electronics and machine drive electronics for the manufacturing facility in Oak Ridge, TN as well as the production facility in Piketon, OH.
- Additional assignments will be related to gaseous centrifuge enrichment machines, support equipment and other industry projects.
- With minimal supervision, provides electrical engineering support by preparing design packages, construction specifications, statements of work, equipment specifications, schedules, and cost estimate necessary for project implementation in a safe, effective, and efficient manner.
- With minimal supervision, manage multiple projects including offset manufacturing of electronics and testing in-house.
- Incumbent will have experience, knowledge, and skills in Electrical Engineering discipline; is responsible for all phases of assigned standard engineering projects, ensuring the successful conclusion of all phases within an appropriate time and at an appropriate cost.
- Plans, develop, implement electrical instrumentation and control systems and electrical design modifications incorporating various types of electrical components with a variety of power distribution levels.
- Performs technical review, system walkdowns, troubleshooting, and day-to-day technical support for the design of a centrifuge plant.
- Work effectively and transparently with other design disciplines or outside engineering firms to accomplish successful design completion to meet project schedules.
- Exercises responsibility for accomplishing complex and unusual electrical engineering assignments on schedule and on budget.
- Must be capable of working within a multi-discipline engineering organization understanding that many of the designs that the ACO-OR engineering organization works on are electro-mechanical in nature.
- Develop design requirements, lead projects and mentor other engineers.
- Prepare bills of materials, cost estimates, and specifications for procurement of materials and equipment.
- Interact with other business units of the US Department of Energy (US DOE).
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering plus 6 years of experience or equivalent in industrial electronics, preferably with an emphasis on PEEM design.
- One to three years of experience working in manufacturing.
- One to three years of experience working in embedded systems design.
- One to three years of experience working in R&D.
- Strong interest and/or design capabilities covering an array of electrical equipment and systems from low voltage DC systems through low voltage three phase systems.
- Strong written, presentation and verbal communication skills; analytical and computational skills; computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and Outlook communications.
- Must be able to obtain or already possess a DOE “Q” clearance.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering plus 12 years of experience or equivalent in industrial electronics, preferably with an emphasis on PEEM design.
- 4+ years’ experience in the nuclear industry.
- Standard industrial plant electrical distribution systems and associated national electrical codes and regulations.
- Knowledgeable of applicable codes and standards (i.e. UL, IEEE, NEC, ANSI, OSHA, NUREGS).
- Electric motor design and/or manufacturing experience.
- Embedded software development and/or testing experience.
