Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Robotics Engineer with expertise in designing, developing, and maintaining robotic systems for demanding applications. This position focuses on engineering sophisticated robotic manipulators for hot cell environments, where precise operations under hazardous conditions are critical. This position resides in the Facilities Management Section of the Non-Reactor Nuclear Facilities Division of the Isotope Science and Enrichment Directorate of Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Design, simulate, and implement robotic systems and manipulators tailored for operation within hot cell environments.
  • Develop robust, kinematic and dynamic models ensuring precision, safety, and reliability in hazardous conditions.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to integrate control algorithms, sensor feedback, and human-machine interfaces.
  • Conduct risk assessments and safety analyses for manipulator designs to comply with nuclear facility and radiation handling guidelines.
  • Oversee prototype development, testing, troubleshooting, and iterative improvement of advanced robotic systems.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation, including design specifications, test reports, and safety procedures, in accordance with ORNL and regulatory standards.
  • Stay current with emerging robotics technologies and recommend innovative solutions that enhance system performance in hot cell applications.

Basic Qualifications
  • BS degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in robotics, kinematics, and control system design, particularly for safety-critical applications.
  • Experience in designing and prototyping robotic manipulators, with an emphasis on operation in high-radiation or hazardous environments.
  • Proficiency in simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink, ROS, or similar) and CAD software.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and communicate complex technical concepts effectively.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and regulatory requirements related to nuclear facilities and hot cell operations.
  • A minimum of 3 years of engineering experience related to robotics and/or hot cell infrastructure.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field with a focus on robotics or automation.
  • Prior experience working in nuclear, defense, or other high-risk industrial environments.
  • Knowledge of radiation-resistant materials and components.
    * Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to research and innovation in robotic applications.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Special Requirements
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
