Location: Community High School District 218

Reports To: Building Principal, Assistant Principal of Pupil Personnel Services, Director of Special Education

Summary & Purpose

The Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction and case management services to high school students with disabilities in both co-taught general education classrooms and self-contained instructional settings. The position supports students in accessing rigorous academic content while addressing individualized learning, behavioral, and transition needs outlined in each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). The Special Education Teacher collaborates with general education staff, related service providers, and families to ensure students receive appropriate services and make meaningful educational progress.

Key Responsibilities Instructional Leadership and Classroom Operations
  • Deliver high-quality instruction in both co-taught and self-contained classroom environments to ensure students with disabilities have access to the general education curriculum through specially designed instruction.
  • Develop and maintain structured classroom environments that support academic engagement and positive student behavior.
  • Supervise and provide direction to classroom paraprofessionals to ensure effective instructional and behavioral support for students.
  • Modify curriculum and instructional strategies to maintain academic rigor while addressing diverse learning needs.
Case Management and Student Services
  • Serve as Case Manager for assigned students receiving special education services.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with federal and state regulations.
  • Progress monitor student goals using data-driven practices and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Collaborate with related service providers including speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, school psychologists, and social workers to support student progress.
  • Collaborate to assist in the development of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) as needed.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and case management records in district-approved systems.
Program Administration and Compliance
  • Actively participate in IEP meetings, annual reviews, reevaluations, and Manifestation Determination Reviews (MDRs).
  • Ensure compliance with all federal and Illinois special education regulations, including meeting evaluation and IEP timelines.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, services, and transition planning.
  • Coordinate with general education staff to implement accommodations and modifications in classroom instruction and assessments.
  • Support post-secondary transition planning for students with disabilities, including college, career, and independent living goals.
EXPECTATIONS
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance during the school year and participate in required school and district meetings.
  • Attend and actively participate in IEP meetings, multidisciplinary team meetings, and professional development activities.
  • Complete all district-required and state-mandated training including but not limited to mandated reporter training and other ISBE-required certifications.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student information in accordance with FERPA and district policy.
  • Remain current on federal and Illinois state laws related to special education.
Qualifications Required
  • Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL).
  • LBS1 (Learning Behavior Specialist I) endorsement.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and data analysis skills.
Preferred
  • Experience working with high school students with disabilities across multiple instructional settings.
  • Experience in co-teaching and inclusive instructional models.
  • Experience implementing behavior supports and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies.
  • Experience working with high school transition planning and post-secondary services.
