Position
Description:
The Assistant Principal of Pupil Personnel Services is responsible for overseeing and coordinating special education services, student support programs, and related personnel within the high school. This role focuses on ensuring compliance with special education laws, promoting inclusive practices, and supporting the academic and social-emotional needs of all students.
Essential Functions
Leadership and Operations
* Assist the Principal in monitoring daily building operations.
* Support the hiring process for certified and classified staff.
* Supervise and evaluate certified and classified staff, ensuring high performance and professional growth.
* Act as a liaison between building-level staff and district administration.
Student Services Supervision
* Oversee and coordinate personnel including Social Workers, Special Education Teachers, Speech Pathologists, Psychologists, LEAs, Paraprofessionals, Itinerant Service Providers, Nurses, Attain Program Staff, Connections/Wellness Program Staff, Student Assistance Program Staff, English Learner/Bilingual Staff and the Special Education Department Chair.
* Oversee teacher assistants, including evaluations, scheduling, and development of professional development and training.
Special Education and Support Staff Program Administration
* Serve as the lead for McKinney-Vento Act implementation, supporting homeless student services.
* Oversee suicide assessments, threat assessments, and other critical mental health interventions.
* Collaborate with the Teaching and Learning Assistant Principal and department chairs to operate MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports), with a focus on Tier 3 interventions.
* Coordinate SEL-related efforts in conjunction with the Assistant Principal of Discipline.
* Oversee specialized programs, including Foundations, Build, ASD, Multi-Needs, and the Attain Program (building specific).
* Act as a liaison for Special Education discipline issues and serve as the disciplinarian for the restart room.
* Collaborate on EL (English Learner) and Special Education programming initiatives.
* Ensure compliance with testing accommodations for ACCESS, MAP, DLM, and SAT exams.
* Attend IEP and MDR meetings as necessary to support the needs of students and families.
* Work with department chairs to coordinate 8th grade placements.

Additional Responsibilities
Work collaboratively with the Special Education Department Chair to enhance and advance special education instructional practices.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.
Qualifications & Experience
Minimum of 5 years of teaching or support staff experience in special education or related fields
Prior experience in leadership roles in special education or student services
Demonstrated success in implementing and managing special education programs
Required Education & Certification
Master's degree in Educational Leadership, Special Education, or related field
Illinois Professional Educator License with General Administrative Endorsement (Special Education endorsement preferred)
Required Knowledge and Skills
Thorough understanding of special education laws, regulations, and best practices
Strong interpersonal skills to build trust and effective communication within the school community
Proficiency in managing special education and related services
Ability to oversee and implement SEL initiatives effectively
Experience in handling student discipline in alignment with SEL and MTSS frameworks
Strong organizational skills and ability to implement systems
Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusive practices
Working Conditions
Requires prolonged sitting and standing; must work in stressful and hectic environments; requires the ability to handle multiple tasks with frequent interruptions; occasional district-wide travel; requires physical and emotional endurance; must be able to work occasional prolonged and irregular hours; requires occasional evening supervision for athletic, academic, and activities.
