POSITION TITLE:
GUIDANCE COUNSELOR
REPORTS TO:
PRINCIPAL AND ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL
Qualifications:
Meet all standards required by the Illinois State Board of Education for certification. A Professional Educator License (PEL) with a School Support Personnel Endorsement in School Counselor is required by ISBE for high school guidance counselors in Illinois
PLANNING:
a. Consult and collaborate with teachers, social workers, administrators, psychologists and other school personnel concerning the needs of individual students.
b. Consult with administration, instructional staff and parents in areas pertinent to mental health which do not involve direct service,
c. Participate in mutually beneficial meetings with other counseling staff.
d. Communicate with other districts for purpose of coordination of special services for students transferring from or into other districts.
IMPLEMENTATION:
a. Act as liaison for parents whose children are experiencing school related problems.
b Act as liaison between the school and colleges or universities.
c Assist as liaison for students and their parents in the transition process between district schools and/or programs.
d Provide individual and/or group counseling for students and parents as needed.
e Provide short-term or long-term casework with students as needed.
f Report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect and work with the students and families in these cases.
g. Assist in the implementation of the district's development guidance program.
h Participate in multidisciplinary staff conferences and annual reviews.
i Attend annual reviews at feeder elementary schools for the purpose of transitioning special education students to the high school buildings.
j. Maintain notes on students and parents served as necessary.
k. Assist in providing testing services designed to assess student capabilities.
l. Assist students in making realistic educational and career decisions.
m. Promote scholarship awareness and assist students in applying for funding.
EVALUATION:
a. Monitor attendance and discipline of students and provides assistance.
b. Interpret test scores for parents and students.
c. Assess students academic and career goals.
INTERACTION WITH STUDENTS
a. Communicate effectively with students and parents.
b. Assist as a member of the crisis management team.
c. Serve as a member of the student support team.
d. Provide crisis intervention services to students as needed, specifically including high risk students (suicide intervention, drug prevention and intervention).
e. Readily available to students and parents
f. Assists in registering students and orientation to school policies and procedures.
INTERACTION WITH STAFF, TOTAL SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY
a. Communicates and works with appropriate support personnel.
b. Communicates and works with other staff members and administrators
c Cooperates and communicates with parents/guardians.
d Shares ideas, materials and methods with other staff members.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
a. Attend and participate in scheduled staff development meetings.
b. Participate in department meetings and professional projects as directed by the Director of Student Services.
c. Adheres to school regulations and board policies.
d. Responds appropriately to concerns initiated by parents/guardians.
e. Completes duties effectively and promptly.
f. Maintains regular attendance and is punctual.
g. Follows the Teachers' Handbook and District Policy Manual as required measurements of expectations and requirements.
h. Is required to attain continuing professional development units (CPDUs) as mandated by the State of Illinois.
I. Has flexibility to attend evening events for incoming students.

All employees must adhere to district Board Policy, administrative procedures, and the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CHSD 218 Support Staff Agreement, I.E.A. Local 218). Employees in this role are subject to all relevant Illinois and federal laws governing the education and employment of individuals with disabilities, including IDEA, ADA, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Mandated training requirements must be completed as directed.
