Overview
As a Youth Services Librarian, you will work closely with the Public Services Supervisor and staff to develop and implement children’s programs for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, provide patron service and assist with electronic resources, assume responsibility for materials selection in assigned collection areas, assist in providing outreach to local preschools, and keep current with children’s literature. This position is part-time and non-exempt.
This position reports to the Public Services Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDING, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Provide assistance in Youth Services, which may include preparing displays, bulletin boards, brochures and newsletter articles and performing database searches. Position requires excellent communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum requirements for this position include a Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited school or its degree equivalent, in addition to expertise with technology and strong design and layout skills plus proficiency in Microsoft Word, Publisher, and PowerPoint. Experience in a school or public library working with children and young adults is ideal.
PHYSICAL/MENTALREQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Wide flexibility of movement is required including ability to sit on the floor, bend and stretch to reach items on shelves and necessity to sit for a long period of time. Perform proofreading and keep up with library literature. Excellent computer skills are required.
SELECTIONSELECTION:
Candidate screening process may consist of an application review, employability assessment, interviews, reference checks, and other verifications. Chosen candidates will be subject to a background and criminal history investigation, and qualifying pre-employment medical examination and drug screen.

This is a 15 to 18 hours per week position (the hours may vary), with at least one evening a week and participation in a weekend rotation. This position is not benefit eligible, and does not participate in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
