Interventional Radiology Technologist (ARRT)
Position Summary
Under the direction of a Radiologist, the Interventional Radiology (IR) Technologist performs advanced invasive imaging and diagnostic procedures to assist in the evaluation and treatment of complex medical conditions. This role requires strong technical skills, sterile technique, patient monitoring, and expertise in interventional imaging.
Key ResponsibilitiesPatient Care & Preparation
- Explain procedures and prepare patients for exams
- Collect and verify patient medical history
- Prepare and administer contrast media, medications, and IV solutions
- Monitor patient condition before, during, and after procedures
Procedure & Equipment Support
- Assist the Radiologist during complex interventional procedures
- Prepare and maintain sterile fields
- Set up and operate:
- Imaging equipment
- Physiological monitors
- Pressure injectors
- Catheters, needles, and procedural supplies
- Ensure all supplies are stocked and properly stored
Imaging & Radiation Safety
- Perform imaging using ALARA radiation safety principles
- Select appropriate technical settings to minimize radiation exposure
- Position patients and manually operate imaging equipment to obtain accurate diagnostic images
PACS & RIS
- Ensure high-quality image transmission to PACS
- Resolve image errors and confirm image/series counts
- Complete all study documentation in RIS (study start, end, and completion)
Quality & Compliance
- Perform quality assurance activities
- Maintain accurate clinical and billing documentation
- Follow departmental policies and safety protocols
Team Support
- Assist in training new staff and students
- Demonstrate professional behaviors including AIDET, communication, teamwork, and patient-centered care
Education
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must maintain required continuing medical education (CME)
Certifications & Licensure
- BLS (Healthcare Provider)
- ARRT Registered with Advanced Registry in one of the following:
- Cardiac Interventional Radiography (CI)
- Vascular Interventional Radiography (VI)
- Cardiovascular Interventional Radiography (CV)
