Job Description Summary

The Quality and Patient Safety Specialist (RN) plays a critical role in ensuring that healthcare facilities deliver safe, high‑quality, and patient‑centered care. This position provides leadership, coordination, and support for organization‑wide quality and safety initiatives. It monitors performance, manages the Safety Incident Reporting (SIR) system, and facilitates investigations, data analysis, and communication of outcomes. Working collaboratively with nursing, medical staff, leadership, and interdisciplinary teams, the Specialist drives continuous improvement, regulatory compliance, and a culture of safety throughout the organization.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Evaluates the quality of patient care and monitors compliance with current regulations and best practices.
  • Manages the Safety Event Reporting (SER) system, including review, follow‑up, and trend analysis.
  • Supports investigations of patient grievances tasked from patient experience and patient relations staff through medical record review and ensure timely response.
  • Participates in and facilitates root cause analyses, adverse event investigations, and process improvement activities.
  • Collects, analyzes, and prepares quality and safety data for committees, leadership, and frontline staff.
  • Supports peer review, quality improvement, and interdisciplinary safety committees.
  • Provides education, consultation, and coaching to staff on patient safety, quality improvement, and regulatory/survey readiness.
  • Collaborates with community and health system partners to align care delivery and safety initiatives.
  • Demonstrates professional accountability for nursing practice and adherence to organizational standards.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the position.
  • Performs all other duties as required or assigned.
Prerequisite Skills
  • Clinical expertise and sound judgment to assess, monitor, and improve patient safety systems.
  • Advanced data management and presentation skills; ability to collect, interpret, and communicate data effectively.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills across disciplines and leadership levels. Knowledge of Joint Commission, State, and Federal regulations related to quality and safety in highly matrixed 1206(g) clinics.
  • Experience in project management, process mapping, and change management methodologies.
  • Ability to facilitate staff training and competency development in QI and patient safety principles.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality, professionalism, and alignment with the organization’s mission and values.
Qualifications

Education: BSN required. MSN in Nursing strongly desired.
