We are recruiting a Scrap Inspector to join our team at our new Nottingham site.
This is a critical quality control role responsible for inspecting incoming and outgoing scrap materials to ensure compliance with customer specifications, environmental permits and company standards. The Scrap Inspector plays a key role in protecting site profitability by preventing contamination, identifying non-conforming materials and maintaining product integrity.
You will work closely with site management, weighbridge, plant operators and the commercial team to ensure materials are processed correctly and meet required grades.
Key Responsibilities- Inspect incoming loads of scrap to verify grade, quality and compliance
- Identify and reject non-conforming, hazardous or contaminated materials
- Check outgoing loads against customer specifications and contractual requirements
- Liaise with yard operatives and plant operators to ensure correct segregation
- Record inspection findings accurately and maintain documentation
- Support dispute resolution regarding material quality where required
- Monitor stockpiles to ensure grade integrity is maintained
- Report any environmental or compliance risks immediately
- Assist with internal audits and compliance checks
- Ensure materials meet internal grading standards
- Protect the business from financial loss due to contamination or incorrect grading
- Support adherence to site environmental permits and waste regulations
- Maintain clear communication with site leadership regarding quality trends
- Wear appropriate PPE at all times
- Operate safely within active yard environments
- Remain vigilant to moving plant and vehicles
- Follow all Health & Safety procedures and Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Report hazards, near misses and unsafe conditions
- Support environmental compliance and duty of care obligations
- Strong knowledge of scrap metal grades (ferrous and/or non-ferrous)
- Experience working within recycling, metals or waste operations
- High attention to detail
- Confidence in challenging non-compliant loads
- Good record-keeping and communication skills
- Experience in a quality control or inspection role
- Understanding of environmental permit conditions
- Knowledge of customer grade specifications
- Assertive but professional
- Detail-oriented and methodical
- Strong integrity and accountability
- Competitive hourly rate (dependent on experience)
- Overtime paid after 40 hours per week
