The RoleAre you a natural leader who takes pride in creating safe, well‑maintained and visually high‑standard environments? We’re looking for a Grounds Maintenance Manager to play a key role in keeping our operational and non‑operational sites across Wastewater, Water and Network areas looking their best.
In this role, you’ll support the Operations Manager and lead a team of dedicated Grounds Maintenance Team Leaders and operatives—ensuring the delivery of consistent site standards in line with our ground’s maintenance plans. You’ll balance hands‑on field presence with strategic oversight, working three days from our Warrington office and two days out on‑site, supporting teams, monitoring quality, and making sure our sites remain compliant, safe, and welcoming for colleagues, customers and partners.
RoleAccountabilities
- Managing a multi‑site Grounds Maintenance team, including all aspects of attendance, performance, wellbeing and day‑to‑day people leadership.
- Leading a small team of equipment fitters to ensure all machinery is safe, compliant and maintained to a high standard.
- Driving efficiency and productivity by improving processes, planning daily work schedules and ensuring all tasks are completed safely and on time.
- Managing an annual budget of £1.5–3m, operating as a profit‑centre and taking accountability for both income and expenditure.
- Overseeing 20–25 base locations with responsibility for a fleet and equipment portfolio valued at £1.5–3m.
- Working closely with Supply Chain partners to ensure all third‑party contracts deliver value for money and strong operational performance.
- Building strong relationships with key internal stakeholders and external representatives across multiple business areas.
- Leading all HR‑related responsibilities for your team, ensuring a positive, safe and inclusive working environment.
- Ensuring full compliance with Health & Safety legislation, internal policies and robust risk management practices.
- Using technical and commercial awareness to understand customer needs and deliver consistently high levels of service.
- Supporting site teams, promoting teamwork, and encouraging flexible, collaborative working across all ground’s teams.
- Preparing and managing fully costed financial plans, overseeing P&L performance, and presenting end‑of‑year commercial and operational reports.
- Coordinating internal resources and third‑party vendors to deliver improvement and maintenance projects.
- Engaging the Grounds Maintenance team in wider themes such as biodiversity, environmental legislation and Health & Safety best practice.
- Delegating tasks based on individual strengths, skills and experience, including effective leadership of Team Leaders.
- Full UK driving licence and the flexibility to travel across multiple locations.
- Proven leadership experience managing multi‑site teams within grounds maintenance.
- Strong people‑management capability, including performance management, coaching and driving positive engagement.
- Solid understanding of grounds maintenance operations, equipment, risk management and safe systems of work.
- Strong working knowledge of legislative frameworks, with the ability to embed a safety‑first culture across dispersed teams.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to influence, guide and support teams effectively.
- Confident stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build strong relationships at all levels internally and externally.
- Experience managing significant operational budgets, analysing costs and making commercially sound decisions.
